Great news for people who were unaware of the 2020 tax penalties for not having health insurance. They are now able to apply for a health insurance through Covered California through a new Special Enrollment Period. The deadline is April 30, 2020. A short coverage gap of up to a full 3 months is exempt from the penalty, so an April 1 start date will NOT be subject to the mandate penalty. However, consumers who plan select after March 31 will have a May 1 effective date an...d, therefore, will be subject to 4 months of penalty. New SEP Coverage Effective Dates and Penalty Please Note: Regardless of when consumers plan select, they must still effectuate their plan by paying their binder payment timely, per their selected carrier’s rules.
