Garment Worker Center 08.06.2021

Yesterday in Los Angeles, we gathered and heard so many powerful stories from folks on what Workers Memorial Day means to them and why we continue to fight for healthy and safe workplaces. We heard from a domestic worker who lost her unborn child at work, car wash workers who lost their co-workers to Covid, a widow of a port driver who mourns her husband who was an outspoken advocate for driver's rights, a garment worker and GWC member who expressed disbelief at the continued... wage theft, substandard conditions and the effects of the Covid pandemic on his co-workers. We also heard from members of the Pilipino Workers Center who lifted up the names of all their loved ones who passed away from Covid-19. It's important that we continue the fight in memory of those that are no longer with us. We must also lift up legislation that will protect workers. In garment, we ask you to support the passage of #SB62 The Garment Worker Protection Act. It's time to end wage theft in the garment industry. For more information, visit garmentworkeract.org Thank you to all the organizations who attended and supported. A special thanks to @socalcosh. #WMD #WMD2021 #WorkersMemorialDay #WorkersMemorialWeek Thank you Chris Swainston for the amazing pictures. Toni G. Atkins Anthony J. To Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez & all workers who remind us of the importance of worker health and safety protections, today is Workers’ Memorial Day. No worker... should risk her life on the job. To our farmworkers, caregivers, grocery and garment workers, teachers and school staff, port workers and delivery drivers, nurses and health workers, firefighters, security guards, janitors, hotel workers and housekeepers, construction and carwash workers, government, nonprofit, private employees, and all workers who keep us safe, fed, and strong. On Workers’ Memorial Day & everyday, we remember the dead and fight like hell for the living.

Today, we came together for Workers' Memorial Day to remember those we've lost to preventable workplace hazards. We honor the memory of those whose lives were l...ost and call on local and state officials to hold negligent employers accountable to putting workers over profit, and to pass stronger health & safety laws in our state. #wmw2021 #workshouldnotkill Southern California Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) IDEPSCA Our People Our Port Garment Worker Center Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy

#SB62, our bill with the Garment Worker Center to close loopholes that allow wage theft to the tune of tens of millions of dollars per week in the garment industry, just passed the Senate Judiciary Committee and will now move to the Senate Appropriations Committee!

Garment workers around the world and right here at home in California remain vulnerable to the ravages of the pandemic and are routinely exploited. #CALeg needs to step up to protect these workers with #SB62. Let's get this done! Senator María Elena Durazo Garment Worker Center

"Unfortunately, the L.A. garment industry is a sweatshop industry," says Marissa Nuncio, director of Garment Worker Center. The average garment worker makes $6/hour, though they're actually paid by piece (2 to 8 cents per piece). The GWC wants to change that. https://www.instyle.com//garment-workers-center-sweatshop-
