In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. The California Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremonies are held the first week of May at the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Monument in Sacramento on State Capitol grounds. The ceremonies serve to formally enroll peace officers who have died in the line of duty the preceding year, pay tribute to the over 1500 officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice since California became a state, and to honor the families left behind. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the last two California Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremonies were cancelled out of an abundance of caution. We still take the time to honor California peace officers, including some of our own, who have made the final sacrifice.

Earlier today, members of the Gardena Police Department along with mechanics from @LAXautoRepair did something special. Through a collaborative effort with our community, citizens were able to drive their vehicle to the police station where they received their personalized serial number etched onto their catalytic converter. This was done to combat the ongoing catalytic converter theft epidemic. The next time officers pull over a suspicious individual in possession of an un...explainable amount of catalytic converters, officers will know the items were stolen. Several local vendors also donated PPE items which we were able to share with those who participated in today’s event. Today’s event was such a success that we are already looking at doing more events like this in the near future. Dates are to be determined. Keep an eye on our page for further information! #gardenastrong #bettertogether

Today, members of the Gardena PD, along with the Hawthorne PD, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and many friends and family of Diego Cerna participated in a Welcome Home drive-by at his family’s residence in Gardena. He has had a busy 2021. A few weeks ago, 13 year old Diego was hospitalized due to COVID19. While in the hospital, Diego was diagnosed with a type of cancer and immediately underwent treatment for that. Thankfully, he is finally out of the hospital and on his way to healing up. Diego wants to be a police officer someday. We will be waiting for his application! Welcome home and get well soon, Diego!

As we celebrate Black History Month, we would like to honor recently retired Sgt. Rodney "Gunny" Gonsalves. Rodney Gonsalves first began his career when moving here to California from Boston, Massachusetts in 1979, after enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. After proudly serving his country, in1989 he began his career in law enforcement with The Gardena Police Department. During his career, he worked in specific details such as Motorcycle and Firearm Instructor, P...eer Support Team, Explorer Advisor, Honor Guard, coordinated The Wall that Heals Memorial, and much more. In 2020, Rodney Gonsalves retired as Sergeant from the department after serving the community for 30 years and 8 months. He is currently a Reserve Officer with Gardena PD, working specifically in the Honor Guard detail. Sgt Gonsalves states that "it is my admiration of Gardena- its residents and businesses that encourages me to protect and serve them as long as I can".
