The entire Galerie Michael family is mourning the passing of our founder and friend, Michael Schwartz. This is a time of great sorrow, yet in equal measure, great joy. We are saddened because we will no longer share in his unbridled enthusiasm, hear his wonderful stories, laugh at his endless jokes, or learn from his lifelong expertise in the top-tier of the art world. Yet we are joyous. We have all been dramatically improved as a result of our interactions with himwhethe...r for a few moments in passing, or as we experienced years, or even decades, of mutually-respectful and enlightening friendship. We have been enriched in more ways than we can list, and we now count our collective blessings. Galerie Michael was founded in 1979 by Michael and Jan as a mutual passion with the vision of helping clients around the world build museum-quality collectionsone work at a time. Michael worked to the very end to find and acquire the absolute best art available in order to be sure that Galerie Michael clients, and their heirs for generations yet unborn, could enjoy the finest art in their own homes and offices. He left us with an unparalleled collection of truly extraordinary art, because it was Michael’s unending wish that the gallery named after him would thrive after him. And so it shall! We will be working tirelessly to be certain that his legacy lives on. We have very large shoes to fill, but the footprints he left lead us toward his future vision and destination. Farewell to our Founder and Friend! The entire Galerie Michael family is deeply saddened to make the following announcement: Michael Mayer Schwartz, 81, of Somis, California, passed away October 1, 2020 in Beverly Hills, California.... Michael was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. As a young man, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably for two years. Upon his return, he immersed himself in the fine arts, which led to a lifelong passion he shared with thousands of people around the world for his entire professional life. In 1979, he and his wife, Janet, moved to Los Angeles and together established Galerie Michael, which quickly became one of the foundations of Beverly Hills’ world-renowned Rodeo Drive. It remains the street’s only art gallery, operating in the signature Via Rodeo section alongside Versace, Tiffany, Porsche Design, Richard Mille and Stefano Ricci. Michael never lost his fascination and passion for great works of art, ranging from Rembrandt through the Barbizon artists to Impressionism and the Modern Masters, including Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Matisse and Chagall. He freely shared his love with everyone he met, and his enthusiasm was always contagious. Many of his clients became students, and many students became masters in their own right. He was also a world-class salt-water fly fisherman, international traveler, gourmet cook, story-teller and comedian, all of which enhanced his ability to command and entertain any room he entered. Married for 54 years, he is survived by his wife, Janet, and their children, Julie (Mark Ukra), Alex (Angela), and Jon (Sandra), as well as four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Michael is gone, but his legacy is eternal.
