Customers of The Budding Violet craft store and Red, White and Brew coffee shop in Rhode Island will find a welcoming space for visitors of all abilities. The business was inspired by owner Sheila Coyne’s family experiences with autism. Her son, Michael, has autism, and at 23, when he had trouble finding employment at local businesses, the family decided to take matters into their own hands.

Marcial and Sofia came to our Vocational Training Services (VTS) program with some work experience from our Direct Employment/Work Activity Program, but wished to explore jobs in other fields. With the supporot of the FVOS team, Marcial and Sofia were able to secure paid internships with Marshall’s this year. Now they are responsible for unpacking and shelving new inventory and maintaining store layouts that are clean, organized, and inviting to customers! In their own words:... [VTS] provided me an opportunity to learn more skills and allowed me to build new friendships which helped with my confidence and social skills."- Sofia I speak to customers at my internship at Marshall's and I feel like I've gotten over that fear of speaking because I have to provide customer service. [FVOS] also helped me get over my fear of meeting new people and helping them."- Marcial We sincerely hope that you will consider joining us in supporting people like Marcial and Sofia by giving to FVOS this holiday season. Creating more stories like Marcial and Sofia’s is not possible without the help of community members like you. We truly appreciate your gift!

According the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities was more than twice the rate of those without a disability last year. Bitty & Beau's Coffee of Charleston, SC, is one of many companies that are fighting this troubling trend. Bitty & Beau’s is a coffee shop run entirely by people with Down syndrome, autism, or cerebral palsy. All employees have a disability, and all managers have degrees in special education. Now Bitty & Beau’s has started a program at a local high school to help students with disabilities get ready for life after school. https://www.live5news.com//high-school-students-with-disa/

Grace Jagler, the woman behind Gracie Doggie Delights, is only 22 years old, but started a successful business out of the basement of her home in Watertown, Wisconsin. Each month sees sales growth, with nearly 1,500 orders placed throughout the United States. Starting a new business is challenging for most people, but she does this all successfully while having Down syndrome.
