6 Surprising Things Your Dog Can Smell We all know that dogs have an excellent sense of smell. We see them utilizing it day after day, whether it’s sniffing around on a walk or meeting someone new. Dogs are capable of finding just about anything with that sensitive nose. It makes sense we use them for so many incredible things like drug and weapons detection and search and rescue. But what about some less conventional things that dogs’ noses are used to detect? Here’s a quirk...y list of some impressive things that they can sniff out! Bed Bugs Have you ever seen those nasty things?! Hopefully notbut if you do, you can call on some dogs! Exterminator companies have started training dogs to detect bed bugs so they can start getting those little creatures out of your house for good! This is especially important when you’re looking to buy or rent a new home dogs will let you know beforehand whether there are some extra tenants that need to be removed. Underwater Remains Yes, that does mean human remains. Most of us are aware that dogs are trained for both live find search and rescue and cadaver finds. We’d always rather have them save someone, but unfortunately that’s not always the case. When things get ugly, sometimes bodies are underwater. But our dogs have the amazing ability to find them no matter where they may be. SAR groups will take their trained dogs on boats over bodies of water, and believe it or not, the dogs will indicate above water where the remains are hiding below. High Blood Sugar Thinking of Diabetes? You’re spot on. Dogs are able to detect, using that nose, when blood sugar levels in the body of humans are becoming dangerously high. This is especially helpful for children with Diabetes who don’t always have a parent around to help monitor, like at school. These dogs can be used as service dogs to help keep their owners safe and healthy. Cancer It has been discovered that cancer cells actually have a distinct smell of their own. This has incredible benefits to us, and dogs have been trained to alert on the strong smells of certain lung and breasts cancers. These unique scents often flow up through the patient’s breath, and the dogs are able to indicate. Whale Poop Yes. You read that right. Dogs have been trained to detect whale poop. Riding on boats much like their SAR partners, these special dogs assist scientists and marine biologists on locating whale feces. Scientists analyze animal feces for a variety of reasons, but whale poop is harder to obtain as it doesn’t stay floating for long. Dogs, however, are reported to be able to locate a sample over a mile away. Electronics Only a handful of dogs have been trained to sniff out things like hard drives, memory cards, and flash drivees. But these dogs are able to help find evidence to convict cyber criminals and child predators.

Need a homemade recipe for your pups? Here is one. The recipe comes from the following website http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com. Following is the cooked" recipe that is suggested twice a day for a 20-lb dog: 1/2 lb (about 1 cup) ground or chopped meat (chicken, turkey, beef bison) brown lightly. Use preferably free-range, grass-fed with no hormones or antibiotics (I purchase from Costco). I decided on mixing chicken and beef.... 1 rounded teaspoon powered bone meal. Per the book I read bone meal MUST be added whenever feeding dogs meat. Use only food-grade bone meal. I purchased on line KAL brand "Bone Meal Powder. 1/4 cup raw veggies - suggested were carrots, broccoli and zucchini. I tried all of them and the kids preferred broccoli lightly steamed finely chopped. 1/2 teaspoon Canine Digestive Enzymes (purchased Dr. Goodpet brand). Since I decided to cook the recipe calls for adding digestive enzymes because dog’s system is designed for raw food recipe calls for more enzymes to absorb cooked. General vitamin/mineral See more

What Can Happen When Your Dog Chews Or Eats Bones: There are dangers, regardless of whether the bones you feed your dog are raw, cooked, big or small. Here's what can happen. 1. Broken Teeth... Painful for the dog, and predisposes the tooth to infection. Requires anesthesia and surgery to fix or remove the tooth. 2. Obstructed Airway Distressing for dog and owner, as the dog has difficulty breathing. Requires quick action to remove the lodged bone. Sometimes attempts are unsuccessful, and plenty a dog owner has been bitten by their distressed dog while trying to remove the lodged bone at home. 3. Digestive Irritation Leads to pain and inflammation of the lining of the stomach (gastritis) and/or intestines (enteritis). Often results in a refusal to eat, as well as vomiting and/or diarrhea (frequently with blood in it). 4. Digestive Obstruction Blockage of the stomach and/or intestinal tract results in vomiting, abdominal pain, electrolyte imbalances, and dehydration. If obstructed long enough, the blood flow to that area of the digestive tract can become compromised and the tissues can die off, resulting of spillage of gut contents into the abdominal cavity. Anesthesia and endoscopy and/or surgery is typically required to remove an obstruction. 5. Digestive Tract Perforation Sharp points on broken bones can poke through the wall of the stomach and/or intestines as they pass through, resulting in spillage of gut contents into the abdominal cavity. This is a very painful and debilitating condition, requiring surgery and intensive care to correct.

5 Common Household Cleaners Toxic To Your Dog. We all like to keep our homes neat and clean, but keeping our four-legged friend healthy is definitely a priority. Here we have a list of 5 common household cleaners that can actually harm or even kill your beloved dog. 1. Ammonia... Using ammonia is an effective way to clean your house, which is why many people use it even on a daily basis, but ammonia can also be pretty dangerous to your dog’s health. Even the dog owners who don’t use ammonia are in danger. The thing is that it can actually be found in most oven and glass cleaners, and you probably use those! 2. Products That Contain Chlorine Like it is the case with the previous cleaner, there are various products out there that contain chlorine. Make sure you take your dog outside when using the following: all-purpose cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, laundry detergent, dishwashing detergents. Even the vapors left behind when cleaning with chlorine products can hurt your dog’s skin and eyes, while licking it could cause them to become very sick. 3. Toilet Bowl Cleaners Toilet bowl cleaners are extra harmful. Not only do these contain chlorine, they usually contain other harmful chemicals as well. These products can cause skin irritation, illness, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures. To be safe, make sure you use nontoxic toilet bowl cleaning products. 4. Drain Cleaners Should you end up with a serious case of clogged drain, you need to make sure your furry friend is not around when you resort to drain cleaning products. Common drain cleaners are toxic to your pooch and can cause them to become disoriented. 5. Laundry Detergent Like toilet bowl cleaners, almost all detergents contain both chlorine and other chemicals harmful to your pet. The safest way to wash your pooch’s favorite blanket is to choose a detergent that is free of all dyes and harmful chemicals.
