Funks. Is. Love. This Friday, we'll be saying goodbye to one of the greats. A chapter of my life that I'll NEVER EVER forgot. Funkanometry SF Dance Company. Fu...nks defined my young adult life, pushed me harder than I've ever been pushed before, and helped make me the strong woman I am today. At the young age of 19, I was handed the ropes and told that "I was the only one who could do it" by my good friend, Kyle Wai Lin. I was scared shitless. Because the company meant so much to me; I didn't want to eff it up. So at the age of 19, I started running a 501c3 nonprofit organization. I read countless books (like How to run a Nonprofit for Dummies), attended tons of workshops and seminars at the Foundation Center learning about grant-writing etc, and got to work. It pushed me to my limits. So many emotional ups and down. We expanded the company from 30 people to 150 people, we built 3 new companies, launched community and after-school programs, and produced the FIRST ever Funks show, The Sockhop to sold out audiences. We partied our asses off. We traveled to Colombia, the Philippines, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, and the UK. Those days at In N Out Union City, Joanne Brown Dancers, Dancemakers Studio of The Arts, Westlake School for the Performing Arts, city dance studios, Tahoe retreat, Jet, Fuz, Pride, Vibe, and Body Rock were some of the greatest of my life. Gloryzen Mendoza has been a huge part of the Funkanometry family for as long as we could remember. Aside from being Funks SF Alumni, she's was Funksters Co-Artistic Director from 2005-2009 and De La Femme Co-Artistic Director from 2009-2011.
