I aspire to be a data scientist and plan to leverage my skills in data and project management to solve customer interfacing problems. Gathering and unveiling the story behind the data in order to spur data-driven decision-making can help companies make better and sometimes more ethical decisions. -- Ruila Puskas-Juhasz, MEng ‘21 (IEOR/IPES) Berkeley Industrial Engineering and Operations Research

#HumansofFung: I have been tutoring students for over three years. Working with both college-level and primary school students, I have been able to see a great change in attitude and approach towards learning from them after implementing inclusive teaching practices I learned from a pedagogy course during undergrad. My students are now more open to exploring different paths of learning that are suited towards their individual needs because they feel that their personal hist...ory is being considered in the classroom. They are now more willing to try and less worried about making mistakes because they understand that learning is a process and that I am a resource for them, not a policing force. Having seen this change first hand, it’s inspired me to try bringing inclusive pedagogy training to both instructors and GSIs in STEM, especially in the field of engineering." -- Natalia Matti, MEng '20 (BIOE)

#HumansofFung: I have always been a strong advocate for women in technology in leading student organizations and being vocal about inequality issues. To me, the issues are not only about not having enough women in technology. It is about everything else - rooted beliefs of women's responsibility in family, ignorance of women's talent and interests in traditionally male-dominated areas, difficulty of establishing authority at work, "brotherhood" in tech. Therefore, to support... women in technology is to support all women in gaining equal access to resources and career success. Even though it might be hard to discuss these issues and the topic can come off as "too serious," if we do not openly discuss them, no progress will be made. -- Maggie Jiya Zhang, MEng ‘21 (EECS) The 2020 Virtual Grace Hopper Celebration took place from September 29 - October 3. The commemorate the past week's festivities, celebrating #WomeninTech, we wanted to highlight the perspectives of the Fung Institute's own #WomeninEngineering with this special edition of #HumansofFung throughout the month of October.

#HumansofFung: As a female engineer, I am a direct product of the community which empowers women in technology to succeed. Through mentorship from a vibrant network of women and allies, I was shown how to overcome self doubt and isolation in my educational career and envision engineering as a field in which I belong. Now is my chance to give back to this community. While I continue to learn from women about challenges I’ll face in the future, I’ve also started my own journe...y as a teacher and mentor for young girls with an interest in technology. It is my hope that someday seeing women in technology will be so normalized that we will no longer be known as female engineers. Instead, we’ll simply be known as engineers. -- Shubha Jagannatha, MEng ‘21 (EECS) The 2020 Virtual Grace Hopper Celebration took place from September 29 - October 3. The commemorate the past week's festivities, celebrating #WomeninTech, we wanted to highlight the perspectives of the Fung Institute's own #WomeninEngineering with this special edition of #HumansofFung throughout the month of October.

#HumansofFung: In the United States, I am privileged because I have white skin and was born in this country. I am also a college graduate and currently attending graduate school. These aspects allow me to live without constant fear for my safety. However, I have also experienced injustice personally because I am a non-heterosexual female. As a reaction to these hardships, I became increasingly conscious of racism, homophobia, and sexism. I am compelled to act to eliminate th...ese injustices. I wish to contribute and benefit from diversity at UC Berkeley by sharing my own background, pursuing curiosity for other worldviews, and respecting our inevitable differences. Having the support of the MEng program to be involved in dialogue inside and outside of the University’s programs would be very valuable in my efforts to include discussions of privilege and social change into such a male-dominated field as engineering. -- Vianna Quenon, MEng ‘21 (ME) The 2020 Virtual Grace Hopper Celebration took place from September 29 - October 3. The commemorate the past week's festivities, celebrating #WomeninTech, we wanted to highlight the perspectives of the Fung Institute's own #WomeninEngineering with this special edition of #HumansofFung throughout the month of October.
