THEA 197F: Introduction to Stage Combat. This course will be a unique opportunity for students to explore how to safely create and perform illusionary violence within dramatic literature. This semester will focus on three weapons disciplines of the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD): Single Sword, Unarmed and Knife. In addition to learning the fundamental principals of stage combat, students will also be introduced to Viewpoints; which is an improvisational process ...created by post-modern dancer, Mary Overlie and further developed by stage director Anne Bogart. Viewpoints is a physically-based process, designed to help the performer develop their skills by deconstructing all the essential performance elements present in performing arts: Space, Time, Shape, Motion (kinesthetic), Emotion and Story. I like to think of Viewpoints as the actor’s theory of relativity, we observe the phenomena of our work and try to understand the very nature of living truthfully in imaginary circumstances. By the end of this course, you will develop a fundamental stage combat vocabulary and understanding of the founding principles to make non-violent actions appear dangerous and real. In addition, you will also develop a greater sense of self and relationship to others while creating a deeper understanding of the Six Viewpoints and how to apply it onstage, no matter the content or context of your performance.
