FSC-K9 fans, the continued outpouring of support over the past year has paid off and the wait is over! K9 Garin is on patrol! Garin is a 19-month-old German Shepherd, who joins us from Eastern Europe. He and his handler Deputy Maul completed the necessary handler training course and they were successfully certified. K9 Garin is certified to provide handler protection as well as conduct controlled substance detection. They began their first night on patrol on October 30, 2020. The name Garin in German means guard or guardian and we know that he will live up to that title, serving as a guardian for his law enforcement partners and the citizens of Shasta County.

On Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at approximately 5:15 a.m., a woman called 911 and reported her husband had struck her in the head with a beer bottle. When deputies arrived at 2017 Elizabeth Ave., in the city of Shasta Lake, they found the Victim and suspect, Levi Sherley, in front of the house. The Victim was bleeding from a gash on her head and stated she had been knocked unconscious. Levi immediately ran back into the house where their three children were inside sleepin...g. Levi closed and locked the front door denying access to law enforcement. Deputies called Levi on his cellular phone, but he would not answer. Deputies made several verbal announcements at the front door telling Levi to come out of the house. After several minutes’ deputies made entry into the residence through the front door. Levi was found lying face down, with his hands tucked under him, on the living room floor. Deputies gave Levi numerous commands to expose his hands and place them behind his back. When Levi failed to comply, Deputy O’hara used his K9 partner Ace to apprehend Levi after a brief struggle. Deputies were able to safely take Levi into custody. All the children inside the house were unharmed. Levi was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance then booked into the Shasta County Jail for the following charges: 273.5 PC inflicting corporal injury to a spouse, 245 PC assault with a deadly weapon and 148(a)(1) PC obstructing and delaying a peace officer.

On Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 2017 hours, Robert Turner called SHASCOM to report his neighbor, Justin Leon Barnes (Age 31), assaulted him and was at Turner’s residence, located on the 17000 block of Red Bud Lane, City of Shasta Lake. While deputies were on their way to the scene, they were updated Barnes was outside Turner’s residence and threatening harm with a baseball bat. When deputies arrived on scene, they contacted Barnes, who was not armed with the baseball bat, in... the area of Turner’s residence. Deputies ordered Barnes to the ground numerous times in attempt to gain his compliance. Barnes immediately began defying orders given to him, challenging deputies to fight, and resisted the deputies’ attempts to bring him into custody. Deputy O’Hara deployed his partner, K9 Ace, during the incident. After a struggle, Barnes was apprehended with the help of K9 Ace and taken into custody. During the struggle, Barnes assaulted both Deputy O’Hara and K9 Ace, but they did not need medical attention for the assault. Anderson PD Arrests Wanted Felon After Short Standoff On October 29, 2020, at about 1045 AM officers with the Anderson Police Department responded to the 2800 b...lock of Nicole Court after receiving a report of a male subject observed jumping the fence of the property and accessing the residence’s backyard. Officers were familiar with the residence and knew it to be the home of Gary Glen Fox, age 44, of Anderson. A records check revealed FOX to have an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest for burglary. When officers arrived on scene they attempted to contact FOX at the front door but received no answers. Officers went to the rear of the residence where they began to hear movement from inside the house. Two family members then exited the house and allowed officers in to search of FOX. Evidence was located suggesting FOX was hiding in the attic of the residence. FOX was given multiple commands to surrender, and that if he failed to do so chemical agents and a K-9 would be used to apprehend him. Shasta County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Fritz and his handler arrived on scene to assist. APD officers inserted O.C. (pepper spray) rounds into the attic in an attempt to get FOX to comply, however they received no response from him. Officers then obtained access in the attic from the roof. FOX was observed laying in attic insulation and was again given commands to surrender, which he failed to do. Additional O.C. rounds were placed into the attic. FOX then began to move, causing the ceiling to collapse and for him to fall into the living room. FOX was again given commands to surrender, however he failed to do so, and attempted to climb back into the attic. K-9 Fritz was then deployed to apprehend FOX. After a brief struggle FOX was taken into custody. FOX was subsequently booked into the Shasta County Jail on his warrants and five counts of resisting arrest, after being medically cleared at a local hospital for the canine bite.

On Saturday, 09/12/2020, at approximately 07:50 AM, deputies with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, City of Shasta Lake Enforcement Division, responded to the 4100 block of Johnson Street after a resident in the area reported a residential burglary in progress. Upon arrival at the residence, deputies established a perimeter and attempted to contact any subjects inside the residence. Through further interviews with other residents in the area, deputies determined that Howa...rd Lawrence Selig, age 36, from the City of Shasta Lake, lived at the residence. It was also determined that no one was observed entering the residence since the previous evening. A records check was conducted which revealed Selig is currently on felony probation for a prior vandalism conviction and had felony warrants issued for his arrest. Selig is also pending criminal charges for recently fleeing from law enforcement during a traffic stop. Deputies attempted to contact Selig at the residence but received no answer at the door. After confirming there was no burglary in progress and no reason to believe Selig was currently inside the residence, deputies were preparing to leave the area. Deputies were then notified that an anonymous male caller reported seeing a subject armed with a firearm in an area on the opposite side of the City of Shasta Lake. Due to the circumstances of the new call, deputies responded to that area. Upon arrival, the deputies determined through interviews with witnesses that there was no armed subject in the area as described. Based upon the unfounded report of a subject with a firearm being made while deputies were outside of Selig’s residence, deputies believed Selig made the false report to lead deputies away from his residence. Deputies then returned to Selig’s residence and determined that Selig was likely inside the residence. Deputies obtained keys for the residence and attempted to conduct a probation search of Selig’s residence pursuant to his probation terms. When deputies attempted to enter the residence, they discovered the doors were barricaded with large furniture items. With the assistance of K-9 Fritz, deputies then forced entry into the residence and located Selig in a bedroom inside. Selig initially was not compliant but surrendered to K9 Fritz and was taken into custody without further incident. Selig was still in possession of the cell phone with 911 in the call history matching the time of the report of the subject with the firearm was made and a methamphetamine pipe when he was detained. Selig was placed under arrest for his felony warrants and the following misdemeanor charges: 148.3(a) PC: Reporting a false emergency, 148(a)(1) PC: Resisting, delaying or obstructing an investigation, 11364(a) H&S: Possession of drug paraphernalia, and 1203.2(a) PC: Violation of probation. Selig was then transported to the Shasta County Jail and released to jail staff.
