It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of a wonderful and admired colleague from our department. Dr. Stephen Rodemeyer, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, passed away on October 16, 2019. Steve was a faculty for 42 years at Fresno State from 1967-2009 and served as the Inaugural Smittcamp Family Honors College Director (1999-2009). He was a well-loved organic chemistry professor earning the Provost Award for Excellence in Teaching (1994) and served as Chair (1971-77) of the department. He and his wife endowed the Stephen and Risa Rodemeyer Organic Chemistry scholarship in 2012, that has been awarded to 12 students. He will be dearly missed and we will remember his mentorship, friendship, and enthusiasm for supporting students. Information regarding a memorial service will be posted.

This week's Fresno State Chemistry Department Seminar is titled: Targeting Aedes aegypti Midgut Proteases as a Potential Mosquito Control Strategy. By Alberto A. Rascón, Jr.... Chemistry Department San Jose State University Friday, March 27, 2015 12:00 noon 12:50 PM AgMechanics, Room 102 ABSTRACT Mosquito-borne diseases continue to have a worldwide impact on human health, and with the presence of the Dengue fever and Chikungunya viruses, and the biological vector Aedes aegypti in the United States, local impacts on human health are starting to be observed. Both the Dengue fever and Chikungunya viruses exclusively utilize humans as reservoirs and amplification hosts. This is important because the female Ae. aegypti mosquito requires a blood meal from a human host in order to obtain the proper nutrients to fuel the gonotrophic cycle. Unfortunately, no treatments or vaccines are available to combat the Dengue and Chikungunya viruses, and so the only strategy to prevent the spread of these viruses is through mosquito population control. Current vector control strategies using insecticides have proven effective in reducing the mosquito population and slowing down pathogen transmission. However, there has been an increase in Ae. aegypti mosquito resistance to available insecticides. Therefore, our strategy is to target the proteolytic enzymes involved in blood meal protein digestion. Before we can validate these midgut proteases as a potential vector control strategy, we must first fully understand how individual midgut proteases digest blood-meal proteins. Our research will advance the knowledge of Ae. aegypti midgut proteases, while initiating the trajectory to validate them as potential inhibitor targets. This may lead to the development of a new vector control strategy.
