Message from Dr. Kubal about a job opportunity: As director of the Social Research Institute and a lead investigator on a new evaluation project, I'm looking to hire a hard-working student who has strong methodological skills, for 15 hours per week, at $15 per hour. The job starts upon hiring, which hopefully will be on or soon after Feb 25, 2021. Applications are being accepted now; for full consideration, your application letter and vita/resume should be sent to [email protected] no later than Feb 20. The Project A team of sociologists and psychologists are working with the Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health to complete a 3 year evaluation of a new homeless shelter. The purpose of the evaluation is to assess whether the homeless shelter's programs (low-barrier access, motivational interviewing, and widespread use of peer support specialists) influence the care-seeking behavior of clients. Data collection and analysis will rely on both quantitative and qualitative data, based on instruments from the published academic literature. The Job The student research assistant will be assisting with data cleaning (and some limited preliminary analysis) of both quantitative and qualitative data, and will also work on clerical work for research, such as filing, transcription, attending meetings, and other work for the project, as assigned. All work will be completed remotely. The ideal candidate The student should be able to commit to at least 1 year working on this job, and preferably longer (up to 3 years). The ideal candidate will have plans for ongoing education (e.g., graduate school). The student must have specific classroom training in quantitative and qualitative methodology in the social sciences. Familiarity with SPSS, Nvivo, and Survey Monkey are preferred. Please describe your training and skills in your application letter, along with your future plans, availability, and reason for applying. Any preliminary questions can be addressed to Tim Kubal -- [email protected] ********** Timothy J. Kubal, PhD Associate Professor of Sociology California State University Fresno, CA 93740 [email protected]

#DYK that this semester, @fresno_state’s department of Child and Family Science (CFS) joined our college? A discipline that studies, children, adulthood, and close personal relationships. Dr. Kathleen Dyer anticipates several CFS students to minor in other COSS departments and vice versa.

Do you recognize these former professors from our department? If you know and love Michelle Kilner, this message is for you: Michelle has recently been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a type of blood cancer for which there is no cure. She is fatigued, has required some blood transfusions, and is disappointed by the blood tests that are tracking the progression of the disease. It might lift her spirits to hear from former students. Please consider sending Michelle a note of thanks for how she has enriched your life. 12779 Rueda Acayan; San Diego, 92128-1714

Better Period is a charitable, donation, and volunteer-based organization founded by Priscila Villanueva, a Fresno local and Fresno State alum. Working with over twelve local organizations, Better Period collects menstrual products, assembles period kits, and provides them to those in-need, which often constitutes homeless shelters and college students. No one should suffer the indignation of lacking such necessities -- an idea Better Period was built on. Therefore, Better Pe...riod seeks communal support so as to provide period dignity for all. Financial contributions can be made through their PayPal, while menstrual products can be directly donated through their Amazon Wishlist, and further useful information can be found on their website. Some history to help us understand how race shapes the lives of families in Fresno

Child and Family Science 28.08.2020

CFS students, past and present: As we process this most recent wave of police brutality against African Americans and the resultant public outcry, I hope that we are situating this moment alongside the 400+ years of violence and oppression that black people have experienced in the U.S. I hope, too, that we are bearing in mind the powerful position we occupy as scholars of Child and Family Science in meeting this moment. We know that racial bias emerges in early childhood, fa...r earlier than most would like to think. We know that these biases are born from exposure to problematic stereotypes that children encounter, just by virtue of moving through the world. We also know how important it is to have real, critical conversations about race, about our country’s painful past, and about how that past has shaped the present reality of racial injustice. As scholars of, and advocates for, children and families, we are uniquely positioned to help counteract problematic stereotypes by engaging in critical dialogue with children. Let us remain resolute in our commitment to having conversations about race early and often. By doing so, we embrace the opportunity to shape the future of our country in meaningful and tangible ways. Keep up the important work

The work of two CFS students supporting families and children in the Central Valley is being spotlighted this week by Fresno State. Jessica Jimenez and Selene Lopez Espinoza are using skills developed in our department to connect local families with resources. Impressive! They are among the many students who are frontline workers serving our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are fortunate to have one another. Thank you, CFS students. Keep up the great work! http://www.fresnostatenews.com//graduating-seniors-finish/
