Communities become safe when there is real investment in people and neighborhoods, not increased policing when police criminalize our loved ones. Fresno deserves it. #FundFresnosFuture #CareNotCops

POLICE DO NOT BELONG IN OUR SCHOOLS. Yesterday was the 22nd anniversary of the Columbine school massacre, where two young white boys in Colorado gunned down their classmates and teachers in what was then the deadliest school shooting. That shooting ushered in era of harsh punishment policies known as zero tolerance and the number of school police sky rocketed. NONE of that has ended mass shootings in our schools. In fact police presence and the billions we spend on police bu...dgets across our country and in our schools has not ended the epidemic of gun violence. Only getting guns off our streets and making sure they dont fall in the wrong hands will. Police in our schools - like in our communities - has made the lives of Black and brown kids less safe. Just like in our communities, school police target Black and brown kids more for arrest and referrals to law enforcement. IT IS TIME TO END POLICE IN OUR SCHOOLS. Young people of color, parents and families of color are and have been demanding an end to police in our schools for the past two decades. I am incredibly proud of the young people at Power California 99Rootz Fresno Barrios Unidos who are leading this fight in the third largest district in California. In the name of #MahkiaBryant #AdamToledo #AnthonyThompson defund school police. Fund smaller classes, more teachers, health and wellness, school counselors, college prep, student support services. ALL THE THINGS that make our schools safe, caring places to learn and help our children thrive. @powercalifornia - Jung Hee Choi

Barrios END OF YEAR Recap: #CareNotCops is a campaign led by and for young people of color. Selena Rojas and her peers are redefining what safety means for students. Selena wrote an Op Ed in the Fresno Bee about how SRO's (police) affect mental and physical safety of students. Barrios participated in the Commission on Police Reform, including the launch of the People's Commission Report that included Barrios' youth demands for investment in school culture, a climate rooted in cultural wealth, wellness centers, social emotional programming, and #PoliceFreeSchools in order to cultivate safety. To support our efforts to redefine school safety, consider donating your End of Year gift to Barrios: https://fresnobarriosunidos.z2systems.com//f/donation.jsp
Rest is a radical act of self healing and community care. Barrios is shutting down operations for the next two weeks and we’ll be back Jan 4, 2021! We are giving ourselves space to recover & reflect on the challenges, wins, and losses of 2020. And to reset and recharge our passion for community & love for our people in 2021. We got a lot in store for Fresno in 2021. Have a SAFE and merry New Year!

Jennifer Rojas, a program coordinator with Fresno Barrios Unidos who presented the report’s recommendations, said the report was one more step toward continuing to put residents at the forefront where decisions about their community are being made. She listed demands from the report, including auditing the Fresno police budget, ending spending on military-style weapons, investing in jobs and youth centers, as well as requiring ongoing psychological evaluations of police after an officer-involved killing.
