Fremont Community Garden 05.11.2020

Hi Fremont gardeners! Hope all of you are well during these challenging times! We're having a socially distanced workday on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. We'll be taking some safety precautions: Stay 6 feet from other gardeners.... Wear a cloth face mask such as a bandanna, Wear gloves, especially when coming in contact with shared surfaces such as the gate or tools. Wash hands often. Bring water (and probably sunscreen and a hat). Smile. You're outside in nature, growing good stuff to eat and smelling beautiful flowers. We've had several security issues in recent weeks with non-gardeners and unsupervised children roaming the garden without permission. We're going to be changing the security codes on the gates soon, possibly on Saturday. Once changed, the new codes will be emailed to member gardeners. DO NOT SHARE THE CODES with non-gardeners. Treat the codes like your ATM code -- it's a secret. Some other reminders: Children are not allowed to be in the garden without an adult gardener. No long distance supervision. It's for the kids' safety. No dogs in the garden (even on leash). No alcohol in the garden. (It's a city park, so same rules apply.) If you have not yet paid your registration fees, Bill Maynard from City of Sacramento will be there from 9 to 10 a.m. to accept registration checks and complete annual forms. This is an inspection Saturday, too, so please make sure your gardens are weeded, mulched and planted for summer. Please pay special attention to bindweed (it looks like a morning glory). Bill will not re-register any plots with bindweed. As for what to do -- we've got a lot of weeding: Weed paths Weed bocce courts; remove grass. Weed 14th Street fence and median strip. Weed behind the shed. Remove bindweed from empty plots, children's garden and other common spaces Cut up material for composting Looking forward to a productive work weekend in our garden! Hi Fremont gardeners! Longtime no see! Hope all of you are well during these challenging times! At least, we can get outside and garden! Vegetable gardening is an essential activity; it's food production as well as outdoor exercise. Also, Fremont is considered park space, so it has remained open to its members. The city has given us permission to invite our member gardeners to come out and participate in a work weekend. Instead of a workday morning, get your community hours i...n sometime between Friday and Sunday. (At least, that's when we have the city's trailer for hauling garbage bags.) This is the note from Bill Maynard, who is in charge of Sacramento's community gardens: "Please mention to the gardeners that they can do their hours at the garden at any time this weekend...the trailer will be at the garden sometime Friday. So they could start Friday evening, Saturday / Sunday AM or PM...it will be leaving on Monday... Weather is going to be warm to hot the next few days.. drink plenty of fluids "Remind them to keep 6 feet apart, wear gloves, as for masks - something is needed.. at least a bandana - masks can be harmful to some when doing work cutting oxygen levels. And of course wash hands." To recap: Work day is work weekend, May 8-10. Stay 6 feet from other gardeners. If you have not yet paid your registration fees, there will be an envelope in the shed. Please include the necessary forms with your check. The forms should be in the shed, too. Bill will follow up with in-person meetings. We have one large plot that has become available immediately. If a gardener in good standing wants to move into a larger space, contact Debbie on Saturday morning. She'll be there from 9 to 10 a.m. As for what to do: Weed paths Weed bocce courts; remove grass. Weed 14th Street fence and median strip. Cut back Japanese irises (not the bearded). Weed behind the shed. Remove bindweed from empty plots, children's garden and other common spaces Cut up material for composting Speaking of composting, we need brown leaves, straw and other browns to balance all the new greens we've been adding. Looking forward to a productive work weekend in our garden! Stay well! -- Fremont Garden Advisory Board Debbie, Wendy, Lynn, Alan, Marylee, Chris, Evan, and Kathryn

Hi gardeners! Hope you are all well! Due to current restrictions, Saturday's work day is canceled. But that doesn't mean there isn't work to be done. Please keep maintaining your own plot. Weed, plant and mulch as you normally would in April. Also, maintain the path adjacent to your plot. Our garden will remain open to members as long as we maintain social distancing and safe practices.... Wear gloves when touching shared surfaces such as faucets, hoses, gate handle and shed lock. Also wear gloves while using our shared tools. If you haven't paid your registration, please contact city liaison Bill Maynard at [email protected] to make arrangements. He will finish registrations in the weeks to come. If you are having health issues or can't maintain your garden this spring, please let us know. Enjoy your garden! Stay well! -- Fremont Garden Advisory Board Debbie, Wendy, Lynn, Alan, Marylee, Chris and Kathryn

Hi gardeners! Bill Maynard, Sacramento's community garden liaison, told us that the city's community gardens will remain open during the coronavirus shutdown. The garden is considered a city park and open space as well as an essential source of food. So keep gardening. Keep tending your plots -- and pulling weeds. Just remember to keep your distance from other gardeners. (It's all about social distancing.) Bill also suggested that gardeners bring their own gloves and wear glo...ves while using any tools from the shed. Wear gloves while touching the gate lock, tables or other shared surfaces. If possible, wipe down handles after using tools. Wash your hands often and avoid touching your face. Bill also extended the registration deadline for at least a couple of weeks. If you haven't registered yet, make sure to contact Bill at [email protected]. Get some exercise and be healthy! Greetings, gardeners! Saturday, March 14, is our March work day and the final day for annual registration. Bill Maynard, Sacramento’s community garden coordinator, will be at the garden from 9 to 11 a.m. to collect fees and accept forms. The city only accepts checks or money orders; no cash or cards. Small plots are $25, large plots are $50.... If you cannot make Saturday’s workday and still need to register, contact Bill immediately to make arrangements. He wants to meet everyone personally. No mail-in forms; don’t leave them in the shed. You can reach Bill at: [email protected] As of Feb. 25, these plots still needed to turn in 2020 registration forms and fees: These plots have not registered (according to Bill) 1 C D G H I J N 2 A D F G H I J M 3 D E G H J L M O P 4 A B 5 A B C D 6 A B Bill plans to put flags on plots to show registration status: green is good, yellow is non-registered and red needs weeding. Here is the message from Bill: Please let the gardeners know that the final day to register is this Saturday 9-11 a.m. at the garden.. If they can’t make that, they need to contact me and make an appointment to pay and fill out paper work before Saturday!!! Any plots not registered by Saturday will be forfeited...and put on the open list. Yellow or green flags will be placed on the non-registered plots at 11a.m. Saturday to show which ones are open because of non-registration. Please tell the gardeners not to remove the flags even after clearing the plots... I will be adding red flags to plots that need to be cleared or weeded (even if they have registered). We’ve had some turnover this season and that includes the availability of two larger plots. If you’re interested in moving into a larger plot, or just moving into a different plot, please tell us ASAP so we can make necessary arrangements. Larger plots are reserved for current Fremont gardeners in good standing. Happy gardening! -- Fremont Garden Advisory Board Debbie, Wendy, Lynn, Alan, Marylee, Chris and Kathryn

Hi Fremont gardeners! Have you visited your plot lately? It's almost time for our monthly work day. February 8 also will be our first registration day. From 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 8, we'll be busy in the garden. There are lots of jobs. If there are particular tasks you'd like to volunteer for, now is the time to speak up. To register for 2020, your plot needs to be weeded and mulched. Bill Maynard from the City will be on hand to inspect plots and accept registrations. A make-u...p registration day will be held March 14. If you no longer want your plot, tell us now. We still have dozens of people on the waiting list. Looking forward to seeing you soon! Greetings, gardeners! A new year but a familiar reminder -- it's time for the second Saturday work day at Fremont Garden. We'll be having our first work day of 2020 on Jan. 11. From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, we'll be cleaning up the garden after recent rain. There's plenty of raking to do and we should start winter pruning. Showers are supposed to be off and on Saturday morning. We'll try to get some work done between raindrops. (If it's really raining hard, we'll postpone.) G...et 2020 off to a great start with volunteer hours. Also, if you don't plan to return in 2020, please let us know. We still have scores of gardeners on the waiting list. Important dates to remember: Bill Maynard will be on hand Feb. 8 and March 14 for registration. Your plot must be clear of weeds, mulched and planted for winter (or winterized) to renew. More on that coming soon. Feb. 8 also is the first scoring date (pass or fail). Hope to see you Saturday!
