By now you have heard that thanks to the surprise results to the #Brexit vote, stocks are crashing. In fact the S&P 500 has lost over 5% of its value in the last 2 days alone. How will the UK's historic vote to leave the European Union affect your retirement account? Probably not very much. While news outlets are eager to report falling stock prices, they miss a vital point; even if the prices of your investments are falling, they are most likely still earning you money. Ove...r the last 25 years a little over half of S&P 500 returns are attributable to rising stock prices while roughly 45% of returns came from dividends (your share of profits from companies you invest in). Even if the price of stocks in general are going down, you still own the same number of shares which can potentially be paying you dividends. To highlight this point, consider that through all of 2015 the S&P 500 was reported to have posted a loss of -0.73%. But include reinvested dividends and the 2015 return would have actually been a 1.19% gain. Yes an investment gain despite the fact that stock prices ended the year slightly down. If you have a well developed investing plan that specifically addresses your needs, is appropriate for your timeline, and suits you tolerance to risk, stay on track when the news tells you how bad it is. If you pay attention you'll find the news is eerily quiet when all is going well.
