Fleet Readiness Center Southwest has 9 Safety Management Sites (SMS) throughout the plant, and today we are recognizing Group Alpha which encompasses buildings 94, 90, 825, and 36. SMS has set and prescribed safety measures in each of the buildings from hearing and eye protection to safety shoes in required areas. Each of the SMS Sites has their own set of representatives from Champions/Co-Champions, Safe Site Lead, and Safety Specialist. All representatives are volunteers and operate the SMS program as additional duties. If you would like further information, please locate your announcement board in your area or contact 619-545-3715 for the safety office.

Overall, VRT teammates Randall Atteberry, Edwin Rodriguez and Barakat Mawalin spent 10 days on the ship, not only installing the drive motors but also realigning the ship’s hangar doors to ensure proper operation. FRCSW’s VRT handles requests and repairs to about five different Coast Guard cutter ships annually. (U.S. Navy Photo)

The final legacy F/A-18 Hornet scheduled to undergo the Center Barrel Replacement Plus (CBR+) procedure at FRCSW arrives at the command's Test Line Nov. 25. Developed by FRCSW in 1991, the CBR+ extends the fatigue life expectancy of the aircraft by replacing the forward and aft dorsal decks, and the forward, aft, and keel longerons (structural beams). To date, more than 150 legacy Hornets have undergone the CBR+ at FRCSW. (U.S. Navy photo)

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hispanic Engagement Action Team (HEAT) hosted FRCSW’s first ever La Vuelta car parade on Thursday, Oct. 15. La Vuelta festivals celebrate Hispanic culture with car shows and regular cruises throughout the San Diego area. FRCSW HEAT has planned a car parade in an effort to celebrate the unique car culture, which is closely associated with the Hispanic population of San Diego, while maintaining social-distance protocols. FRCSW teammates were able to celebrate their teammates' heritage and exhibit their vehicles by driving past FRCSW buildings and waving to onlookers in this car-show-on-the-road. #FRCSW_HEAT #FRCSW

An E-2C Hawkeye aircraft is pictured in the Building 460 hangar aboard FRCSW where it will undergo PMI-2. (U.S. Navy photo) FRCSW Inducts Final E-2C Hawkeye for PMI-2 On the heels of inducting its last C-2A Greyhound for planned maintenance interval three (PMI-3) on August 17, Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) welcomed its final E-2C Hawkeye to undergo PMI-2 September 21.... The airborne early warning system (AEWS) E-2 is the sister airframe to the C-2 transport. The Grumman Aircraft Company developed the airframe in the mid-1960s and both remain in service aboard aircraft carriers. Production of the E-2C variant began in 1973. With its detachable 24-foot diameter rotodome radar system, the Hawkeye’s ability to guard against airborne threats remains the standard for protection of naval carrier battle groups to this day. Inducted from Carrier Airborne Early Squadron 123 (VAW-123), the Hawkeye will be transported to Building 460 where FRCSW performs in-depth maintenance on the aircraft. The airframe undergoes two levels of scheduled maintenance: a light periodic maintenance interval (PMI)-1 at FRCSW Site Pt Mugu and FRC Mid-Atlantic, and PMI-2, or a heavy maintenance, at Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI). PMI-1 is scheduled to continue at both locations to Fiscal Year 2023, according to Jorge Gutierrez-Lopez, FRCSW Props Integrated Production Team (ITP) Program Scheduler. During PMI-1, artisans assess the attachment points of the flight control surfaces on the body of the aircraft, the engines, and other areas identified in the maintenance specification. Sheet metal repairs are made and worn parts replaced, but if a larger repair is needed an in-service repair (ISR) is generated. ISRs are funded separately and usually completed during the PMI procedure. As the Navy’s sole provider of PMI-2 events on the airframe, FRCSW employs a staff of 173 comprised of 120 artisans and 53 indirect support personnel at its primary hub at NASNI. Though not a complete overhaul, PMI-2 is a substantial disassembly of the aircraft down to the fuselage. Artisans remove the aircraft’s wings, engines, landing gear and tail.
