Whether you enjoy a double latte, Black-and-Sweet, iced or Extra-Light, on National Coffee Day, we love Romantic Music Planet's creamy Busby Berkeley-esque video version of "Coffee Time" sung by the great Natalie Cole and her sultry voice recorded in 2008. Originally written in 1945 by Harry & Producer & lyricist Arthur Freed for Yolanda and the Thief, the film starred Fred Astaire and Lucille Bremer. It was Harry's hope that this fantastical fairy tale would translate to a box office hit, but in spite of Director Vincente Minnelli's artful touch and involvement of other MGM musical greats behind the camera, critics agree that the lovely music and dance sequences don't offer the same buzz as other MGM classics. We think you'll agree that from the first sip, the perfect time is Coffee Time!
With the Labor Day holiday weekend coming to a close, we have to get back right at it tomorrow morning with a little extra help with this upbeat number written in 1926 "Where Do You Work-a, John? (Delaware-Lackawan train song)" composed by Harry with lyrics written by Mortimer Weinberg & Charley Marks and Ernie Krickett. Recorded by several artists in the Vitagraph era, with Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians, and later by the great Louis Prima. But its feature in this 1931 Betty ...Boop cartoon "Mask-a-Raid" shows how wide-ranging Harry's music has been used. Thanks to http://www.heptune.com/maskarai.html for a detailed description of this unique Betty Boop feature.
We are holding on to an endless Summer Stock that is, with the anniversary of its release 70 years ago. A robust Judy Garland favorite from the iconic blockbuster was cleverly reprised by the NY entertainer Seth Sikes, for the summer fans of Fire Island with his farm friendly take on (Howdy Neighbor) Happy Harvest. Wishing you all a Howdy Gaybor! Come on along and take a ride,... And look at life from the cheery side... Clap your hands and lick your chops Your bumper crops are on the climb. Bravo!
Happy Birthday Gene Kelly! We celebrate him with his endearing performance of "You Wonderful You" with the vivacious Miss Piggy (and Gonzo too) from The Muppets 1981 show. Written by Harry, Saul Chaplin and Jack Brooks for the film Summer Stock in 1950, it's a lovely tribute to the wonderful Gene!
