On prescriptive authority for chiropractors Some well thought out questions and responses here. If we look at the healing professions we see that while many of them are populated by people who want to do a fine job for their patients, because of the intrusion of the third party into the doctor/patient relationship, this has become more and more difficult with the result that reimbursement has also become more and more problematic. True, a chiropractor, for example can learn h...ow to convince people to get treated on and on and on but that does not make it right or legitimate. Still all doctors need to make a living. If we look at the health care professions, we would be very hard pressed to find one, other than the chiropractic profession, that has not taken steps to expand scope of practice for the benefit of their patients (one stop shop kind of thinking) and for themselves (ability to make a living and pay for education and all the other things life demands). People enter the chiropractic profession because they appreciate the conservative approach to health care, but the person is rare indeed who does not run to the MD when a true infection demands the antibiotic.- and appropriately so. If we review the PEW reports on health care delivery of 97 and 98 we see that the outcomes suggest a "blurring" of scope issues based on education as a distinct benefit for patients. This idea is not new, just slow to move ahead because of the recalcitrance of some in our profession. -James Winterstein- See more

Heat vs. Ice: A common question I get asked is, should I put ice on my neck or should I put heat on my neck? In general, when it comes to injury and severe pain, (ie: ankle sprain) go with ice. If you experience a more chronic injury or stiffness, many times heat will feel better and alleviate some of the stiffness. For pain we find that cold decreases pain and swelling, while heat increases circulation to an injured area. In some cases, contrast therapy is used, employing both ice and then heat in an alternating fashion.
