Interagency Hotshot Crews: The 2019 Wildland Fire Season is promptly approaching. We have afforded these last several months getting reacquainted with our families and livelihoods. As we turn the corner to this oncoming season and refocus our time and efforts training our minds, bodies, and planning for success by honing our skills.... Remember that the people beside you, in front, behind, and even above and below you, all desire the ability to go home to their loved ones at the end of the assignment and the season. Much has advanced since the beginning of organized wildfire suppression, but one thing will never change. That is that these fires will always have Boots on the Ground. As Hotshots, we should remember to, Give more often than receive direction from the Incident Management Teams with regards to that, You don’t work for the IMT’s. You work in conjunction with the IMT’s to meet agreed upon objectives. Professionalism and comprehensive awareness should be maintained through tactical decisions. Safety will always be at the forefront of every task, assignment and mission set forth. Above all else, continuously ask yourself if LCES is intact. All safety measures are rooted to LCES and many have paid the price to afford us these four safety tools. The well wishes and prayers for your safety and protection will be with you on the line. 20 out and 20 back -U.S. Hotshots Association- Do not repeat the tactics which have gained you one victory, but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances. Sun Tzu Pictures of the late and great Paul Gleason, former Zig Zag Hotshots Superintendent. After his experience on the 1990 Dude Fire he developed the easy to remember concept of Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones (LCES) which he distilled from the 10 Standard Firefighting Orders. He as also the first person I known to use the phrase student of fire.
