From an ER nurse..... After 5 in a row 12+ hour shifts in the ED, I come home tonight and realize I have nothing here. I’ve been running around like crazy for the last week for others and not thinking about my fridge, or my TP supply. The chaos has become widespread and has put so much fear in people’s eyes. As of now, I realize my colleagues and I, will get this virus. But I am not worried about us because we know how to REALLY quarantine, and we don’t mind the thought of 14... days in our beds. We are tired. We are over worked. We are mentally and emotionally exhausted, but that’s normal for us. But we have strong immune systems from dealing with the sick daily. I am not worried about us. What I am worried about is how the public has become so selfish and has the every man for themselves attitude. In this extremely critical time, that is NOT how we should be thinking. The only way we are going to save thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands lives, is if we truly truly quarantine, wash our hands, and DONT GO anywhere including the THE HOSPITAL UNLESS you have severe symptoms. We have limited supplies of the equipment we need to keep ourselves and other patients safe. And honestly, we are NOT prepared for 100s of you to pour into the ED because your body aches. You might have one of the most contagious virus we have ever seen, but if your symptoms are mild, like fever, body aches, cough. We will 9 times out of 10, discharge you back home. And tell you to take Tylenol every 4-6 hours. Drink water. Rest. QUARANTINE. Think about how many people you could be infecting by going in public if you’re feeling sick. Think about the cancer patients, the heart patients, the really young, the really old before you run to the hospital with mild symptoms, before you go in public. Think about the fact that you could be sentencing someone to death. This is a very challenging time to be in healthcare but we are doing it because it’s our passion, it’s what we do best and because we want to make a difference. We do it because we care. So please, please please think about your actions and be understanding that this is NOT a battle where everyone fends for themselves. This is a battle where EVERYONE must help protect each other. Everyone has to start caring about the safety of others too. Because we are all in this together. This is a worldwide pandemic, spreading exponentially and we have the capability to slow this down, so please help us. We can do this. We can unite as a human race to slow the spread so we have time to learn and come up with a treatment plan. We just need to remember this is our world and we have to take care of each other.
