Looking back at this past year and all that it has been, we can honestly say that we are grateful. Our community of support, donors, volunteers, and staff gave over and above to help us do what we do. Our doors remained opened, our services were still provided and, most importantly, our clients were still served. Thank you for being a light with us. In 2020, FPRC has seen a rise in unplanned, teenage pregnancies. Leitha (pseudonym) was one of those clients. We were connected through, Options United, a hotline referral service that lists FPRC as a resource. They described her as a 16-year-old girl in high school who wanted to discuss her options - carry and parent, abort, or place the child she was carrying up for adoption. I called Leitha and she explained she was living with her single mother and younger siblings. Her... mom had experienced multiple abortions and Leitha had not told her about this pregnancy. We chatted a while and it became clear, Leitha had already decided she wished to carry and parent her child. We made an appointment for a pregnancy test and an ultrasound. The following day, I received a phone call from Leitha. She had been experiencing nausea and vomiting and her mother had become suspicious and asked her to take a pregnancy test. She had taken many positive tests previously, but oddly, the result of this test was negative. Leitha said she felt God made that happen. The next day, Leitha called again. Her mom figured out she was pregnant and told her she was taking her to Planned Parenthood to have an abortion. When Leitha refused, she was kicked out of the home. Leitha was now staying with her boyfriend’s parents and she asked us to find her alternative housing. We immediately started researching. Leitha arrived to her appointment with her boyfriend, Jamal (pseudonym), who was clearly very supportive of her decision. The ultrasound revealed a 6-week-old fetus. We could see few details but I was able to capture the baby’s heartbeat. With love in her voice and tears in her eyes Leitha said, He’s so little! She and Jamal immediately connected with this new and precious life. We talked about next steps and I encouraged her to give her mom more time to adjust to this new and unexpected information. We prayed together and she thanked me for being there for her in this moment when she felt alone and afraid. This is the work of FPRC.
