PASSING OF DETECTIVE RONEL NEWTON It is with a heavy heart that we inform our community of the passing of Detective Ronel Newton last night. As most were aware..., Ronel had been fighting a second battle with cancer, this time even more serious than before. Yesterday morning, he was taken to the hospital with difficulty breathing. Unfortunately, his condition worsened and he died at approximately 10:30 p.m. This is another tremendous loss to our RPD family, especially coming on the heels of the passing of Detective Aaron Brandt from leukemia. Please keep Ronel’s 7-year-old son Elijah, and all his close family, friends, and partners here in Riverside and San Bernardino in your thoughts and prayers. This planned bootcamp workout and breakfast to-go fundraiser will still take place this Saturday. Local fitness instructor Carrie Hughes (@01fitgirl on Instagram) has set up a bootcamp workout to help raise support, awareness, and money for Ronel and his son. WHEN? Saturday, October 17, 2020 8:00 a.m. WHERE? Orange Terrace Park 20010 Orange Terrace Parkway Riverside, CA 92508 You can participate for a suggested donation of $30 per participant. NOTE: The bootcamp sign-up and donation is required to be completed before October 17th as there is no day of sign-ups available. Go to RPOA.org and click Donate Today for more information. Also from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the Riverside Police Officers’ Association will be cooking up breakfast to go from the Lost in the Sauce BBQ trailer at the park as well. Menu options include breakfast burritos, eggs, bacon, sausage, chorizo, potatoes, and pancakes. Menu prices will vary. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKOUT TO PURCHASE BREAKFAST TO GO You can also show your support by wearing a #NewtonStrong T-shirt. They are currently available for purchase for a donation of $30 per shirt, and will be available this Saturday too. To order yours now, scan the Venmo code on the flyer to pay online, or contact Officer Moberg at [email protected] or text/call at (951) 310-7940. ALL PROCEEDS from the bootcamp, breakfast, and T-shirts will go towards funeral arrangements and to benefit Ronel’s son. All city and county COVID-19 social distancing / mask guidelines will be followed on Saturday. Ronel Newton was a father, friend, and detective with the Riverside Police Department. He was also a member of our Orangecrest community as a resident and where he worshipped. He started his career protecting and serving the neighborhoods he grew up in with the San Bernardino Police Department in 2007. In 2015, Ronel lateraled to RPD where he quickly excelled. He was a member of the SWAT Team, Defensive Tactics Team, and Honor Guard. Ronel fought and won his first battle with cancer a couple years ago, even having one of his lungs removed as a result. He beat it and came back strong. But the cancer returned recently and Ronel fought it hard once again. He was a believer and at peace with his prognosis, and we know he’s in Heaven now free of all disease and pain. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. - 2 Timothy 4:7 #NewtonStrong #CancerSucks

CDFW currently has two injured bears (from the North Complex Fire and the Zogg Fire) and a mountain lion (from the Bobcat Fire) in its care. All three animals h...ave suffered burns to their feet, and are receiving veterinary treatment including the application of sterilized fish skin bandages in the hopes that they can be released to the wild. California’s wildfire season could go on for many months. Realizing that more patients could be brought in for burn care, CDFW and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine are partnering to create the Wildlife Disaster Network, which provides a formal framework for wildlife search and rescue, field triage, transport and a long-term rehabilitation care system for injured wildlife resulting from wildfires. It’s time to make the announcement many of you have been waiting for. When will the Forest reopen? The answer is today! But there will be some prohibitions, as... fire danger remains present. - Camping is only allowed in a small number of developed campgrounds. Dispersed camping and camping at Yellow Post Sites, for example, will not be allowed at this time. - For those camping at the open sites, campfires will not be allowed, including propane campfire rings/pits. Propane stoves and lanterns will be allowed. - Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the forest, including developed campgrounds and recreation sites. - The San Gorgonio Wilderness, its inbound trails and associated parking lots (including Big Falls and Falls Picnic Area) will remain closed due to the El Dorado Fire, which still has active smoke and flame in areas (a 100-acre interior spot is burning today). Crews remain throughout the wilderness working on the fire. - Other areas effected by the El Dorado Fire will also remain closed, including Thurman Flats Picnic Area and the adjacent Forest Service creekbed area, a portion of the Santa Ana River Trail and Thomas Hunting Grounds Road (1N12). - The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) will be closed between Black Mountain Road (4S01) and Snow Creek Village due to the Snow Fire. - All other closures and prohibitions that were in effect before the full forest closure remain in place, such as the Aztec Falls closure and the recent introduction of permits for some wilderness areas. For open/closed statuses on specific sites, please visit their individual pages. As always, feel free to ask questions in the comments section!
