Thank you, Learning for Life, for hosting me on your podcast! It was a LOT of fun to discuss my favorite topic with Jenny and Stacey .
Woohoo!!! Today we are celebrating a HUGE accomplishment awarded to one of our impressive clinicians... (If everyone could join me in applause) Congratulations, Alyssa Chapman, on earning your QOM (Qualified Orofacial Myologist) today . She is now Alyssa Chapman, MS, CF-SLP, QOM.... We are beyond proud of you . Thanks for bringing joy to the children you serve and your dedication to our profession! See more
You know when you hear something and a lightbulb moment happens? I was recently listening to Brene Brown discuss power with and power over leadership styles and I immediately began incorporating those principals into my SLP clinical practice. Example: Observing the child and interpreting THEIR intent is a power WITH (PW) strategy. Modeling language they could use in a given situation to get their needs met is power WITH. Taking equal turns commenting on a book is power ...WITH. Repeating what they said and expanding it (e.g. It IS a red balloon! Look how high it is floating!) is power WITH. Always withholding an item until they ask for it is power OVER. Forcibly denying access to a preferred item or activity is power OVER. Adult selecting what the child should say is power OVER. While power over strategies can be sprinkled in from time to time in teachable moments, Power WITH is where the magic happens.
I often get asked about cups and spoons that are best for oral development. Here is a great tip to train those developing jaws/tongues for proper function early on!
At Folsom Advanced Speech Therapy, we are Asian Pacific Islander Allies. To our AAPI families and community: We see you, we hear you and we stand with you against racism and hate. May we hold our loved-ones close and infuse this world with advocacy, action, love, and respect every day. Thank you to the Speech Pathology Group for this beautiful reminder. I love and miss many of these faces dearly and certainly valued my time getting to work for such a wonderful organization.
This is a wonderful graphic to illustrate integrative needs of children with feeding difficulties.
