The Martindale test is a measure of the durability of an upholstery fabric. Also known as the "rub test," this test looks at abrasion resistance and checks the suitability of fabrics for various heavy-duty and commercial applications.

Eight-way, hand-tied springs is one well known upholstery technique that produces a firm, comfortable seat. This traditional method involves fastening webbing to a sofa, attaching heavy-gauge steel coils to the webbing, and tying each coil by hand eight times.

When selecting upholstery fabrics, it’s important to keep in mind that heavier-weighted fabrics aren’t necessarily more durable. Certain raised or nubby textures can quickly develop frayed threads, particularly on seams, armrests, and cording.
