Elderberry syrup (Homemade Sambucol) Ingredients: elderberries, sugar. Cold and flu preventative and remedy. Immunostimulant, antioxident, antiviral, with vitamins A, B, and C. Adults 1 tablespoon, children 1 teaspoon per day. If cold or flu strikes, take 4 times per day.
With temps in the 20's and a storm coming, we are finishing with the elderberries for now and making sure all the animals will be as dry and warm as possible.
Still canning well into November. Elderberry syrup is important, but so is jam, like Apricot, Blueberry, Blueberry Vanilla, Caramel Apple, Carrot Cake, Cranberry Vanilla, Lemon Ginger, Plum, Strawberry, Strawberry Vanilla, Jalapeno, and Peach Jalapeno.
The jam fairy was busy last night. Wake up to a clean kitchen and lots of strawberry, apricot, and elderberry syrup.

Don't you like to know where your food comes from? Five Dog Farm canned goods, especially our jams, are as locally and organically grown as possible. We hand pick our elderberries! The Kern River Valley provides apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, and lavender. We get jalapenos, cucumbers, and onions from CalOrganic, and lemons, limes, and oranges here in Kern County. Come see the quality of our jam, fresh eggs, and local raw honey at the Home Show this Saturday!
Have you ever heard of Widmanstätten patterns? That's the pattern you see when you slice into a meteorite. You can clearly see the pattern in the slice of a Swedish meteorite currently for sale at MGM Jewelry and Loan Inc. in Kernville.
Like life isn't busy enough, a worker accidently cut into the main power line to the house, nearly killing himself, setting three surge protectors on fire, scorching electrical plugs, and frying loads of electronics, from the router to the breadmaker, an alarm clock, a freezer motor, another freezer's fan motor, the list goes on. Denise valiantly rescued the food, got the freezer replaced, and ordered the parts for the other one. Lucky for me she works so hard!

This chicken won't stay in the chicken pen. It wanders the yard when the dogs aren't looking, and spends its time in the duck pen, with ducks it grew up with.

It's December, and winter in the southern Sierra can be cold, windy, and it gets dark too early. Walking outside into the frigid air you're either well prepared -- or you rush back to a warm and well-lit place. The long evenings allow plenty of time to cook and organize around the dining table. Long evenings are perfect for slowing down and enjoying all that food you grew, pickled, jammed, and dried back when the sun was shining. Winter's crisp embrace makes food from past se...asons taste even better. Each jar captures a spark from the summer's sun, the absolute essence of place and time. Shining in the cupboard, these gems can't be compared with anything you can buy. Home-packed foods are strictly a gift, or to be enjoyed with a close friend.
