#TheWellnessTeam Meet Fireman Matty! Fireman Matty is a 20 year firefighter and paramedic who encountered a myriad of critical incident stressors and similar to many other first responders, he was unsure of how to process the traumatic events; which left him depressed and battling alcoholism. Today, he is still a firefighter, but he's also a mentor for men in 12-step programs, he volunteers as a Shepherd for Save A Warrior, and is an Outreach Specialist here at First Respon...der Wellness. Matty's journey to wellness was tough and we are grateful to him for being a model of hope and resiliency to our entire first responder community. #DidYouKnow that occupational injury is highest amongst the first responder community?...specifically to those working in the capacity of a police officer, firefighter, and emergency medical services. According to the National Library of Medicine, sprains and strains were the leading injury (33-41%) among EMS, firefighter, and police occupations; while police officers and career firefighters had the highest injury rates (8.5 and 7.4 injuries per 100 full-time equivalent work...ers). Remember, it's important for first responders to report injuries and seek the recovery/treatment that is needed. #wellness #injury #firstresponderinjury #police #firefighter #ems #firstresponderwellness #askforhelp

Fireman Matty details his struggles with mental health from the onset of stress he dealt with as a first responder; and how he went from attempting suicide to finding and maintaining wellness. We are proud of Matty as it’s taken much courage to move forward and thank him for being a pillar of hope in the first responder community. #firstresponderwellness #firstresponder #wellness #mentalhealth #advocacy #suicide #suicideawareness

Wounded Heroes Documentary We only have one chance for establishing trust and integrity with first responders - while websites and marketing teams can present a very attractive and well-spoke picture of first responder focused treatment, if what is advertised isn’t truly culturally savvy and experienced, the word goes out that behavioral health doesn’t understand how to help. It’s critically important that resources are fully vetted by FR treatment experts to ensure the one chance is successful. - Stephen Odom, PhD #woundedheroes #documentary #veteran #firstresponder #wellness #mentalhealth #ptsd

Did you know a horse can promote positive mental health through equine-assisted psychotherapy? Equine-assisted psychotherapy is a hands-on cathartic and experiential modality known to help people cope with PTSD, anxiety, substance abuse, and more. It utilizes the eagala model, which integrates therapy and hands-on activities that promote essential skills such as emotional regulation, responsibility, and self-confidence. This form of therapy is perfect for those who may be app...rehensive about pouring out their emotions to a therapist, as it only requires a client to commune with the horses.
