#Repost @caroljenkinsstudio (@get_repost) Did you know that a group of finches is called a charm or a trembling? Such wonderful descriptions! I am calling the first painting in this group A Trembling of Goldfinch. It reminds me that while nothing is certain right nowsome things recur: like the arrival of finches just as daffodils emerge from the receding snow. The phlox and wild hyacinth follow right behind: blues, pinks and yellow everywhere. I’ve been painting with ...these colors this past month. It’s not been easy getting into my home studio--there has been so much to absorb during this global crisis. But even if I paint for an hour most days, it offers such a different way of encountering the unpredictable. There never has been anything predictable about abstract painting. Each splash of paint calls for a new response, every shape or line creates an unanticipated problem that must be solved. A painting grows into itself and cannot be known ahead of time. Even after I’ve finished a painting, I usually have no idea how I did it: it is a call and response, moment by moment, that can never be replicated, (though I have unsuccessfully tried). For me, it is the unexpected marks, those welcome surprises that guide the direction of a painting. I hope we all can find surprising moments of natural beauty or human warmth in all the unpredictability we face. I am trying to give up the notion of going back to normalit turns out that normal is an elusive, longed for, destructive, sometimes comforting but fundamentally misleading idea.
