The Marcom Group was approached by Finch Adaptive Fabrication, makers of high-end, custom wheelchairs, to produce a new logo. Unfortunately, their original logo... was unable to adapt to the client’s various needs and growing recognition. From a technical standpoint, the logo was bitmap/raster format (essentially, a photo), with various Photoshop filters and effects applied. As such, the logo’s use was severely hindered, not being amenable to many commercial production techniques (large format printing, silk-screening, embroidery, embossing, engraving, etc.). The logo pixelated immediately when trying to enlarge it beyond the original designed size. Furthermore, the composition itself did little to engender itself to the client’s target demographic: those pushing the boundaries of their limitations. Firstly, whereas the original logo only included the monogram FAF, we included the full name. Finch was more prominently displayed, with Adaptive Fabrication underplayed, for brand recognitionand future use where the latter could be removed altogether. Both were set and expertly paired in exciting, slanted typefacesFinch being entirely bespoketo suggest movement and speed. The color palette (orange, black) was likewise chosen to evoke sports and athleticism, as well as emulate the namesake bird. Finally, the logomark further ties these messages together, with sweeping lines, dramatic angles, and sharp, aggressive features. The entire process was carried out using vector-based software (lossless, scalable) for the best results, no matter the visual medium it is to be used in. In the end, as is our process, the client was furnished with logo usage guidelines, a collection of commonly used file formats and branded stationery (business card, letterhead, and envelope). The Marcom Group set out to make a logo that would both be practical and appealing, and the results speak for themselves. The unique mark is as functional and adaptable as those who will utilize Finch products and wear the brand proudly. It can easily be recognized, from a distance and in small-scale. Each part can be used together or independently, while retaining brand identity. In fact, as brand recognition grows, Adaptive Fabrication can be removed entirely and, eventually, like the iconic Nike swoosh, the logomark can stand on its own. We got it.
