Tony Winters Review of THE ODD COUPLE LAST PERFORMANCE TOMORROW!!!! FCBC's THE ODD COUPLE... My introduction to THE ODD COUPLE was the old ABC sitcom (1970-1975) that starred Jack Klugman as slovenly sportswriter "Oscar Madison" and Tony Randall as the persnickety photog "Felix Unger". As I grew older, I learned of the earlier 1968 film with which starred Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon in those roles, respectively. I can even recall a hipper short-lived early 80s sitcom which starred African American actors Demond Wilson and Ron Glass and the current corny CBS version which stars Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon. All of these incarnations were, of course, adapted from Neil Simon's 1965 hit Broadway play THE ODD COUPLE. This is all to say that the the show, for anyone of my generation, is simply part of the zeitgeist. So walking into newly-remodeled The Living Room in Inglewood to catch FCBC's latest production THE ODD COUPLE, directed by stalwart Dino Shorte, one is struck by the quality of it's handsome set -- Oscar's sloppy 8-bedroom New York City apartment. A quality set can be a harbinger of things to come. In this case it is. We are thrust into the middle of a late night poker game the recently divorced Oscar, a solid Phil Morris, holds for he and his buddies, (Shorte's Roy, Donivan David's Speed, Derek Shaun's Murray, and Melvin Ward's Vinnie) every Friday night. Missing from the game this week is their pal Felix. We learn through a phone call that he has split with his wife of 12 years and could be suicidal before the distraught Felix, a fine Rodney J. Hobbs, shows up at Oscar's front door. It isn't long before Oscar the slob offers Felix the neatnick a place to stay and the insanity ensues. Hobbs, channeling his inner Jack Lemmon, makes a timely entrance and injects a needed timing and rhythm into the comic proceedings. Morris, accustomed to portraying pressed and starched types, is completely game to get down and dirty for Madison. They share an excellent chemistry which is key to any successful production of this show. The hilarity is brought to a crescendo when Oscar arranges for a double date with the British Pigeon sisters, played to side-splitting perfection by the real-life gorgeous sibs, Dayna Dooley and Kimberly Dooley and the evening goes horribly wrong. While there was some ad libbing of lines not written by Simon (I'm such a purist) and a minor lack of commitment to time and place. Were we in 1968 or 2017? The old school phone ring but modern cordless phone left me to ponder that question. But these are small concerns. What matters here is friendship. What matters is this venerable story of two very different men, polar opposites, inhabiting the same space and finding common ground. In this highly charged polarized environment in which we find ourselves living, is not THE ODD COUPLE a metaphor for our times? Let's try to learn a little something from Oscar and Felix. Can't we all just get along?
