Hello Fay Families, On March 13, four months ago today, San Diego Unified School District made the difficult decision to close our schools to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Much has changed since that time: New research is available, additional information on school safety experiences from around the world, and updated health guidelines from state and county leaders. Unfortunately, much of the research is incomplete and many of the guidelines are vague and contradicto...Continue reading

Dear San Diego Unified Community, Even though the official start of school is more than six weeks away, we wanted to give you an update as you look ahead to Aug. 31. San Diego Unified School District has made the decision to start the first week of school online for all students, as opposed to physically reopening campuses.... We arrived at this decision after consistently monitoring the ever-changing conditions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nothing is more important to all of us than the health and safety of students, families, teachers and staff, which is why we ultimately closed schools in March and opted to finish the school year online. Because of similar health concerns, we’re now starting the new year online. Recently in California, new COVID-19 infection cases have increased dramatically. Worldwide, schools that have chosen to physically reopen have a fraction of California’s infection rates. In California, the pandemic is not under control and has been getting worse. We understand our decision to start the new school year online for students may complicate your individual family situation, and we share the frustration you may be feeling brought on by this significant health crisis. We’d like to underscore that, at this point, we’ve only committed to beginning the school year school online. As conditions with COVID-19 change over the weeks ahead, we’ll provide another update on Aug. 10 on the possible timeline to physically reopen schools, along with instructions for the first week of school online. We will get back there, but we just can’t start there. Until then, thank you for continuing to practice the safeguards that health officials know will lower the spread of COVID-19: wear a mask, maintain social distancing and wash your hands frequently. Please stay safe. Sincerely, Superintendent Cindy Marten

Just in: San Diego School Leaders Affirm Reopening Plans to be Based on Science, Research Expert Panel to Plan for School Reopening Conditions In response to recent comments by President Donald Trump and the rapid rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in California, leaders from San Diego Unified and the San Diego Education Association met today and agreed the timing, restrictions, and guidelines for physically reopening schools will be based on scientific information and medi...cal decisions. They agreed to convene a committee of health experts to meet with representatives from the district and SDEA in order to determine guidelines, restrictions and timing for a safe physical reopening of our schools. At the request of San Diego Unified and the San Diego Education Association, the University of California in San Diego (UCSD) has agreed to contribute to the safety review. Home to some of the world’s leading authorities on pediatrics, public health, infectious disease and airborne transmission, UCSD will provide the academic and scientific experts necessary to support the safe reopening of schools. Our partnership with San Diego Unified goes back many years, and includes the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program for students from underserved communities, said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. We are pleased to be able to support this collaboration between San Diego Unified and SDEA to protect the health and safety of the more than 100,000 students they serve. Following the discussions today, San Diego Unified and SDEA issued the following joint statement: As we continue to work together to plan for the 2020-2021 school year, the first priority for educators and administrators continues to be the health and safety of our students, staff, families and community. We note with alarm the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases throughout California. Therefore, we want to take this opportunity to affirm that we will only resume on-site learning when it is safe to do so. The decision to resume on-site learning will be made only after extensive conversations and collaboration with public health officials, health experts, our educators, staff, and administrators. Together, we will provide for a safe and educationally enriching return to student learning, whether online or in person, on Aug. 31, 2020. See more
