We must take care of our bodies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 29, 2020 STATEMENT OF THE CHARLES HOUSTON BAR ASSOCIATION ON THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD The Charles Houston Bar Associati...on mourns the passing of George Floyd, 46, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, whose life was taken on May 25, 2020 by four police officers of the Minneapolis Police Department. Our sincerest condolences to Mr. Floyd’s family, friends, and the millions of people who have felt the pain caused by this tragic incident. While most of us who grieve did not know Mr. Floyd personally, his death reopens a deep wound which prevents many of us from feeling safe in public spaces. Despite the progress made in recent decades towards a more equal society, the taking of Mr. Floyd’s life is a stark reminder that in the eyes of many, the loss of a Black life does not matter. We respect and appreciate the role of law enforcement officers in our society. Many of our members work with and depend on those officers on a daily basis in our roles as judges, prosecutors, and local government officials. All of us benefit from the sacrifices made by the men and women of law enforcement and the professionalism in which they serve our community. With that said, it is of the utmost importance that Mr. Floyd and his family receive prompt and adequate justice. We call on the appropriate local, state, and federal officials with authority over the incident involving Mr. Floyd to carry out a full and complete investigation, and to hold those responsible for his death accountable. We also call on all local law enforcement agencies here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and beyond, to conduct training of their officers which specifically includes a review of the incident involving Mr. Floyd to lessen the risk of similar incidents in the future. The loss of George Floyd’s life must not be in vain. Let his death serve as a moment of reflection that we, as Americans, have not yet reached our goal of a truly equal society and that there is still much work to be done. Let him inspire us to double our efforts to work towards a moment in history where racism is a relic of the past never to be tolerated again. # # #
