DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Dr. King was a Minister, Civil Rights Leader and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. He was also a Warrior.... The Hwa Rang of ancient Korea taught us that every warrior’s duty is to be a champion for freedom and justice. One of America’s greatest champions of freedom and justice was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This grandson of a slave did more to change race relations in this country than did any of our elected leaders. His campaign for justice, peace, and equality brought him the undying love and gratitude of millions, and the Nobel Peace Prize. It also brought him an assassin’s bullet. Dr. King won many hard-earned victories in his lifetime, and his quest for justice lives after him. How did he succeed against the violent forces of prejudice, hate, and even Federal law? He overcame by applying the principles of martial arts. He may never have studied in a dojang, but he certainly lived the tenets of Taekwondo. COURTESY. Dr. King believed in nonviolent persuasion to achieve his goals of freedom and equality for all Americans. He never swayed from this belief, even though he was pressured, jailed, and persecuted. INTEGRITY. Dr. King remained true to his beliefs, and was willing to pay the ultimate price for his mission to create a more just society. His opponents' weapons were tradition, law, and might: Dr. King's primary weapon was right. PERSEVERANCE. Dr. King remained steadfast through incredible hardships and heartaches. His life’s work lasts far beyond his lifetime. His opponents miscalculated his strength, fortitude, and influence. SELF-CONTROL. Dr. King was enraged by injustice and infuriated by prejudice, yet he consistently presented a message of peace and brotherhood, never violence and hatred. Tolstoy said the greatest warriors are Patience and Time. Dr. King had tremendous patience, and time is slowly but surely bringing about his goals. INDOMITABLE SPIRIT. Dr. King was acclaimed worldwide as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, yet he was treated as a second-class citizen in his own country. He was named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year, yet he was jailed as a common criminal. Never did his opponents break his spirit, and never will they end his fight. GRATITUDE. Dr. King’s Sensei were Jesus, Gandhi, and Thoreau. Dr. King was a peacemaker who mastered the Tenets of Taekwondo to become a victorious Warrior for Peace & Justice. He inspired and paved the way for future leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, and Kamala Harris.
