I agree with Gary Taubes, the author of "Why We Get Fat", an independent investigator in Health Policy Research at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. He contends that the evidence that exercise can prevent us from growing fatter is hard to prove. He targets high fructose corn syrup as the guilty villain, rather than sucrose contained in granulated white sugar. Glucose is metabolized by virtually every cell in the body, fructose in metabolized ma...inly by liver cells. Fructose is converted into liver fat, which becomes resistant to the blood sugar lowering effect of insulin. More insulin is secreted to compensate. The end result is elevated levels of insulin, which is the hallmark of type 2 Diabetes. The steady accumulation of toxic fat, particularly in the abdomen, which adds further to insulin resistance, can be compared to a metabolic trap. A low carbohydrate ketogenic diet can reduce insulin, as does aerobic exercise. Why do most commercial weight loss programs rarely produce sustained weight loss?
