East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice 27.04.2021

From South East L.A. to the Washington D.C., we’re excited to see Angelo Logan being appointed to the Environmental Justice Advisory Council at the White House. His national leadership is rooted in community, connecting leaders across the country with the purpose of achieving environmental and racial justice in a country founded upon injustice. There will be numerous obstacles ahead, but we fully believe that Angelo will rise to the challenge and representing our hoods #wearejusttryingtobreathe #fightingforlife

They tell us to stay home to stay safe from Covid-19. But for us, home isn’t safe. There’s no escaping the contamination. #WeAreJustTryingToBreathe

With extreme industrial growth & little regulation, SoCal has failed to meet minimum federal standards for 30 yrs leading to higher rates of asthma & heart disease in the communities nearby. South Coast Air Quality Management District - South Coast AQMD, the time to take a stand for #cleanair is now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=013GBcA_hQ0

FYI a significant portion of the plastic barrier over the Exide facility is flapping in the wind. The damage is clearly visible from the 710 freeway. We contacted DTSC who spoke with the site manager who confirmed a significant tear in the plastic sheeting. They said it is the exterior layer. The interior barrier is reportedly undamaged at this point. Tears in the plastic sheeting present a threat to our communities as the toxins in the facility could be released. We’ll keep ...y’all posted. #NoMoPlomo #WeAreJustTryingToBreathe #FightingForLife #LuchandoPorVida

Ain’t no power like the power of the youth because the power of the don’t stop! SAY WHAT?!?!?!?!!! Our Youth in Action (YA!) core members initiated our youth leadership development #FightingForLife Academy with the goal of getting 50 youth from the Eastside, Southeast LA & Long Beach to participate. This is all through Zoom because of Covid & we weren’t sure we would reach our goal, but... WE HAD 177 YOUTH APPLY FOR THE PROGRAM Y’ALL!!! We scrambled and got all hands on deck ...to allow for as many youth as possible to participate. We are providing stipends for youth who complete all 4 workshops this month & 100+ youth are on target! We hadn’t budgeted for this many youth stipends so we are reaching out to our members & supporters to put down for the youth! OUR GOAL IS $3K. You can donate directly to EYCEJ.org/donate &/or join us for our DJ Rony G EYCEJ fundraiser: Friday, Nov. 6 9pm #PerreoForACause IG Live: @djronyg *You can sponsor a youth stipend and submit a song request by Thursday, Nov 5 w/a $50+ donation directly to Rony-Godoy on Venmo. All donations will go directly to youth stipends* **There is no cost to tuning into the IG Live through @DJRonyG’s account, but you can donate during the #PerreoForACause session if you feeling the vibe & the cause** #WeAreJustTryingToBreathe #FightingForLife #LuchandoPorVida

The state’s audit of the DTSC’s handling of Exide cleanup is out. As we have known for some time, the cleanup has been mismanaged. There are insufficient funds dedicated to the cleanup, and it is inefficient and behind schedule. This is part of why we have been calling for a local cleanup agency to be formed through a Local Agency Formation Commission for years. Phone Number: 855.855.8556 Access code: 1410833#... #WeAreJustTryingToBreathe #NoMoPlomo #FightingForLife *This is listen only. Technically this will be a courtroom and we will be the audience.

****Español abajo**** First off, happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Second, we understand the pessimism around the Exide issues. We too have felt this over the years, and the idea that Trump’s Department of Justice (US DOJ) and Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) will listen to our communities and come through for us right now does feel unlikely, but our unrelenting community struggle is what has pushed these issues forward every step of the way....Continue reading
