EDC stands with the AAPI community in solidarity and in mourning. We honor the precious lives lost, we see the pain, trauma and fear endured, and we pledge to continue to stand against anti-AAPI hate. You are not alone. #StopAAPIHate
"The looming eviction crisis isn’t just about falling behind on rent and losing one’s home to eviction. It’s also about the records of those events, captured in court documents and credit reports, that will haunt millions of Americans for years to come." #evictionsmakeussick #HousingForAll https://www.nytimes.com//opin/eviction-records-crisis.html
"Assembly member David Chiu's bill calls to extend state protections through December 2021, but the legislature won’t convene to discuss until next year. 'This isn’t theoretical. Those are real lives that should’ve been saved and we can’t allow that to be California’s fate,' Chiu said, adding that California tenants will owe an estimated $1.7bn in rent by the end of the year." The legislature must convene and vote to prevent mass evictions in California! @DavidChiu #cancelrent #HousingForAll #HousingIsAHumanRight
Sarah Karlinsky, SF Bay Area Planning & Urban Research Association senior advisor finds that Bay Area municipalities should build 45,000 units of housing per year, and view housing a human right and new housing as basic infrastructure. #HousingIsAHumanRight #HousingForAll
"As the only working person in the household, and with his disability insurance taking too long to process, Chaney appeared to have nowhere else to turn. The Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund referred him to the Eviction Defense Collaborative. 'They were so kind at a time when you would really need somebody to be friendly and warm, Chaney said. I never felt like I was begging or that I was being disgraced because I needed a helping hand.'
The EDC office will be closed for in-person appointments for the duration of shelter-in-place as a safety precaution to limit the spread of the #coronavirus. We have transitioned to providing remote services going forward. If you believe our office may be able to help you with eviction defense or financial assistance for the payment of rent, please visit our website: https://evictiondefense.org Stay safe everyone!
SF Mayor London Breed has ordered a moratorium (a stop) on home #evictions. This means renters who lost income because of the #coronavirus must not be evicted. Learn more on our COVID-19 FAQs page, including special rules for renters who cannot afford their rent because of #COVID-19. #HousingRights #TenantsRights #StopEvictions https://evictiondefense.org/covid-19/
Check this out! https://bit.ly/YouDontHaveToMove Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco has launched an informational campaign to help keep people housed. You don't have to move out just because you can't afford to pay your rent. Avoid being evicted in this pandemic! As always, #KnowYourRights
Thank you for supporting EDC this #GivingTuesday! Thanks to your generosity, we can continue our work to keep San Franciscans housed and off the streets at this critical time. And, you can still donate here: https://evictiondefense.org/get-involved/donate/ #homefortheholidays #HousingisaHumanRight #HousingForAll
#Eviction cases are heard in civil court, where no public defenders are provided, and it is impossible for people in low-income households to afford a private attorney. #Landlords on the other hand have experienced attorneys who specialize in eviction cases. Because of the adversarial nature of our legal system, even #tenants with strong defenses are likely to lose their cases unless they have knowledge of the law and the skills to articulate their defenses. https://evictiond...efense.org/about/impact/ #StopEvictions #evictiondefense #HousingJustice #HousingRights #RightToCounsel #socialimpact

The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was supposed to reverse housing segregation and inequality. Instead, things have gotten worse for Black Americans. Prof. Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor's Pulitzer Prizes nominated book, Race for Profit, explains that we’re missing the point in our debates over government housing programs. And our racialized private market isn’t the cure. Read the interview in this Mother Jones article.:... https://www.motherjones.com//for-black-americans-its-not-/ See more
We're delighted to share that Moms 4 Housing's West Oakland home will shelter homeless mothers and become a location for training them in contract work to create affordable housing. Great work to all on this progress, including our attorney Leah Simon-Weisberg! #housingjustice #racialjustice #BLM #housingrights #humanrights #oakland #affordablehousing #homeless... https://www.mercurynews.com//oakland-moms-4-housing-home-/

City and County of San Francisco drops policy with no notice - only hours before meeting & with no consultation with the community! Join the meeting today at 2pm: http://bit.ly/2G88Wlw Please object to this and demand that the existing grievance policy be codified and expanded instead of replacing it with this new policy Alternative Housing System Immediate Safety Exit which will be imposed next week!... They are calling this COVID-19 Alternative Housing System Complaint and Exit Policy to make it sound temporary, but it is not.
This is disgusting and bottom-of-the-barrel tech for dystopian times. We often say #EvictionsMakeUsSick, but those people and companies profiting off evictions and the misery of those being evicted are just as bad, if not worse. #COVIDIOTS #TechForEvil https://www.vice.com//gig-economy-company-launches-uber-bu
