It’s Wednesday and we all need a little inspiration. We get SO much inspiration from this sweet girl. We hope it brightens your day too . . Our 4 yo daughter seemed to be having trouble moving & jumping with ease like her peers. She would tire easily from walking and shied away from activities like climbing, jumping, and hopping. Since being in PT, she has definitely improved. From the first day with Calyn, she has loved it. She even asked, Mom are you going to sign me ...up for physical therapy? Her confidence has grown and she runs faster! I see her challenging herself on play structures and even at home. One of her favorite games is to play race and showing us how she can hop on one foot. I’m so glad that we decided to sign her up for PT. She looks forward to coming to play with Calyn. Breathe! . . With 8 months of wearing masks, I thought it would be good to remind people of diaphragmatic breathing . Well, actually I didn’t. Our great staff did, and they have been busy writing blogs for our website and posting videos of exercises on you-tube channel and imbedded in the blog. They prepared a special one just for breathing.Featured this week's blog is a collaboration of Nick, Carlos, Ashley and Tiffany. .... . Don’t assume it’s easy. . . With the video I give my patients this homework sometimes. 2x2x2 through 7x7x7 . Using diaphragmatic breathing in the video, start with a simple inhale of 2 seconds and matched with an exhale for 2 seconds , repeat that 2 times. Then, you guessed it, 3 seconds inhale and 3 seconds exhale , repeat 3 times. And so on. You, like most, will find it’s harder than you think it will be when you get to 5,6,or7. Feel free to go to 8, 9, 10 but I find most can’t. And the harder it is you get more practice , so repeat 5 for 5x5, and 6 times for 6x6. Etc. When I was in junior high, my friend got cancer and it’s because of her that I became a PT. Secondary to the chemo, radiation, etc, my friend lost the use of the left side of her body. She was subjected to all sorts of meds, treatments, and procedures. It was painful to watch my strong, beautiful friend go through it all. Going to PT with her was the first time I saw her able to play a roll in her fate, the first time she was able to do something to overcome the crumby car...ds life dealt her. I was performing on stage as the Cheshire Cat in Alice In Wonderland. I had to jump off a tree at the beginning of my solo and landed really forcefully in a crouched position. I continued dancing to finish my solo but was in a lot of pain. I had to hobble around backstage because weight-bearing was so painful. I went to physical therapy for a sprained ankle. I always knew I wanted to be involved in the medical field but wasn't sold on becoming a MD. I loved the atmosphere of... physical therapy and the amount of time the PT got to spend with the patient compared to the shorter time you might get to spend with them as an MD. One of the main reasons I decided to pursue physical therapy as a career is because of my mom. As a single parent, she was able to raise me and deal with all my shenanigans. October is National PT month! It’s a good time to reflect on why I (@davidj4kids) became a PT. I couldn’t be more proud and humbled being part of a profession with so much impact. . . While I admit, when I was in 8th grade I wanted to train dolphins and whales like Shamu, I am glad that didn’t work out. I was fortunate to have a high school science teacher Maranatha High School see my natural interest in the sciences and list all of the science-related careers on a piece of ...graph paper. I can still see his hand writing. #thank-a-teacher . . At a career fair my sophomore year Azusa Pacific University, on Cougar Walk, I went up to a table that had representatives for summer jobs at camps. I found Camp Costanoan, a camp for disabled and that summer changed my life. I returned the following summer and many weekends in between. @tamarajeanjohnson , my wife, even spent a summer with me there =). . . It was a camp for ‘disabled’ kids and adults but I found both campers and staff enabled’ my heart. Being together in a camp setting reduced barriers and gave me clear vision of how I wanted to spend my life. Pictured here is my camper Adam. He had a spinal cord injury but that didn’t slow him down. It’s hard to imagine that he’s probably 40s now, but he, and others showed me how life with physical or mental challenge ENABLES tangible joy. Perspective matters, and I found mine at camp Costanoan. . . I’ve never looked back. . . Thank you Adam and Camp Costanoan where ever you all are. And thank you ALL who’ve been my many Adams ever since. Most since have become ’tall trees’ in the forest of the evergreen story, and never a day goes by when I am not inspired like I was at camp. . . Geesh, it will be 30 years in June since my first job as a PT. To all of my colleagues in physical therapy, I am honored to do this thing we call physical therapy with you.
