In our current exhibition, we are showing Giorgia Valli’s series Universo", on view through Oct. 31st. This work is a desire to materialize the restlessness of daily thoughts and make them real. These photograms are made with the ground of my childhood garden. This soil represents my past and my present and the process is an investigation of my memories, which at the same time are the reality of everyday life. This experience suspends space and time and shows how something... surreal can be understood as real. The movement of the ground in the water reflects unstable and evanescent forms that run through into vast and empty space of the paper, following such as migration. The objective is to make types of maps that were hidden in my unconscious. They are like proofs of the adventures of minds, of this wandering in the deep unconscious that it is like the darkness of the Universe. - Giorgia Valli 1. GIORGIA VALLI, Map of Universe, A.F.G. In our current exhibition, we are showing Rodney Ewing’s series Broken Shadows "Broken Shadows" is an ongoing series that I began during San Francisco’s 2020 mandatory shelter-in-place order and broadly references the positives and negatives of the silkscreens I use to create a lot of my work. The impetus of the project was to keep busyI told myself that I would create a new work every one and a half days to stabilize my art practice during quarantine. Eventually, Broken ...Shadows evolved into a project that allowed me to continue the conversations about diaspora, place, and identity--ideas that have become inherent in my practice. The central challenge in this project is using parts of my previous work to create images that speak to the immediacy of 2020s racially fraught atmosphere. The re-use of material mirrors the cyclical nature of history; the resulting works are one-of-a-kind images that layer the past with the present to remind us of their inextricable link. In the state of siege, time becomes space Transfixed in its eternity In the state of siege, space becomes time That has missed its yesterday and its tomorrow. -Mahmoud Darwish The exhibition is up through Oct. 31! Our hours are Wed-Sat 12-5. Make an appointment, link in our bio! 1. BEHIND THE ARTWORK: Missouri River, Niobrara State Park, Nebraska, 2017 Archival Pigment Print, 40 x 50 inches, edition AP1 Niobrara State Park is stunning. The park is located at the confluence of the Niobrara and the Missouri Rivers on the border of Nebraska and South Dakota. My husband, daughter and I arrived late in the evening after flying into Omaha and driving four hours to this remote corner of the state. The Niobrara River is depicted in Jim Harrison novels, which... is my husband’s favorite author, so he was eager to join me on this adventure. We rented a cabin through the state park in early spring overlooking the confluence. We had the park to ourselves. This is a popular duck hunting destination, but we arrived before the ducks, so we never saw another person. The weather was grey and misty offering a dreamy, introspective light. This atmosphere provides a depth to the landscape that I feel is lost in bright sunlight. Stories are better told through the fog. This landscape holds the history of the Ponca Tribe. Their chief, Standing Bear, (c. 1829 1908) and civil rights leader successfully argued in the landmark case of Standing Bear vs Crook of 1879 that Native Americans are "persons within the meaning of the law" and have the right of habeas corpus, thus becoming the first Native American judicially granted civil rights under American law. The powerful tug of this landscape inspired monumental change in our country and the heartbreaking fight for the right to return home. "Seven Rivers" is up through August 29th. We are now open by appointment, link in bio. #sevenrivers #landscapephotography #contemporaryphotography #environmentalism #newtopographics #filmphotography #4x5 #largeformat #materialpractice @ansleywestrivers @euqinomgallery @ EUQINOMgallery

BEHIND THE ARTWORK: King Canyon, Rio Grande River, Williamsburg, New Mexico, 2016 Ansley West Rivers: I spent a week with my husband and daughter shooting the Rio Grande River from Albuquerque to Las Cruces, New Mexico. We based ourselves out of the small and truly magical town of Hillsboro at the edge of the Gila Wilderness. We used to live in Northern New Mexico on the Rio Grande River, but I had not spent much time south of Albuquerque. New Mexico was in the middle of a dr...ought. The Animas Creek which runs through the town of Hillsboro was dry when we arrived. Locals said it was a long time since they had seen their creek run. Then it poured for two days without ever seeming to let up. It was our last morning in town and we ate a farewell green chili breakfast at the local café. As we were pulling out a crowd was on the bridge watching the Animas Creek charge through town on its way to the mighty Rio Grande River. I was so inspired. I leapt out of the car to shoot just one more photograph, I promised my husband. When I got back in the car, I told him we could go I felt that I had finally got something. We were treating ourselves to two nights in Santa Fe before flying back to Georgia. I promised no more shooting that we could enjoy a little family vacation. We were headed north just outside of Truth or Consequences, NM, when I saw the storm starting to lift and this amazing break in the clouds over the Rio Grande. I almost jumped out of the car in the middle of the road. My husband screamed at me, to please let him find a safe place to pull over! It was that moment that all photographers look for, knowing that it will not last long. This was the decisive moment that Henri Cartier-Bresson so eloquently described. Even though my large format, cumbersome 4x5 camera is not made for the decisive moment, I made it just in time to take this photograph, as the light was gone within minutes.

BEHIND THE ARTWORK: Salton Sea, Colorado River, California, 2017 Ansley West Rivers: The Salton Sea is located in California’s Imperial and Coachella Valleys near Palm Springs. I traveled to the area with a dear friend and fellow photographer, Allison Watkins, in 2017. We were both thirsty to make photographs of this unique desert landscape. For me, the Salton Sea has always felt wrapped in layers of intrigue and catastrophe. My research led me to imagine a landscape beyon...d what I had ever experienced. The abandoned resort towns that dot the Sea where Frank Sinatra had once frequented are now dilapidated verging on haunted. Signs along the waters edge warn visitors of the toxicity and health hazards of the sea. The warnings often accompany old photographs from the 1950s of American Families vacationing in a once enticing water escape. Over millions of years, the Salton Sea has naturally cycled through a changing landscape of a freshwater lake, saline lake and dry desert basin. But the current state of the sea was created by The California Development Company to encourage farming in the desert. The irrigation canals built in the early 1900s were affected by two high water years on the Colorado River, which dumped fresh water into the dry lakebed before the canals could be fixed. The fraught history of man-made attempts at directing nature are ever-present in all landscapes, but particularly overt in the Salton Sea. The bedrock of the environmental conversation is illustrated in the scenery. The dichotomy of now and then lay heavy on my mind while shooting. The surreal landscape tinged in blue and hazy from the heat, ignited my desire to create a photograph fitting for the present state of the sea, but the past was never far from my mind. "Seven Rivers" is up through August 29th.
