"I was haunted by images of a dead seabird, its stomach stuffed with hundreds of pieces of plastic, and a whale that died after eating 64 pounds of plastic debris. I thought of the plastic I’ve used in my lifetime, and where it might be now: a balloon I watched drift off a decade ago, a chocolate-bar wrapper I threw away 15 years ago, that random piece of plastic that snapped off our ping-pong table ...20 years ago. There is a good chance it all ended up with the other 8 million metric tons of plastic dumped in the oceans every year, much of which comes from poorly managed landfill sites, discarded fishing gear, coastal litter and debris flushed down toilets... I started at Trader Joe’s. Instead of spending our weekly $250 at the grocery shop for our family of four, I left out everything wrapped in plastic and I could spend only $59. Sadly, this is the result of #climatechange that’s been melting the ice caps so #polarbears now have less time to hunt for food and are often starving to death. And this is why they now look for food wherever they caneven in garbage dumps! We refuse to allow this to continue to happen without trying to help these poor creatures... and the first step is to spread awareness about this issue because we need everyone to treat the environment better in this critical time.
