Dear fellow Etchells sailors, I think most of us would agree that 2020 has presented all of us with challenges that all of us could have done without! For many of us, socially distanced sailing was a welcome distraction from the daily grind this year and we are hopeful all of you have managed to do well, stay safe and healthy and are looking forward to brighter days. Our Etchells team, like you, is focusing our attention ahead, instead of backwards, and are making plans for ...a much fuller schedule of sailing and social interaction in 2021. Our team has been working hard all over the country helping clients adapt the rigging on their boats with new inhaling systems and we have been fine tuning the geometry of the jibs to make sure they fit throughout the wind range. We have been learning the necessary trimming techniques and are excited about racing with them in the new year. Fellow sailors and friends, it is with regret and after careful consideration and consultation that SDYC Fleet 13 must join many other organizations and activities in cancellation notices. Specifically, the Bill Bennet Cup which is scheduled coincident with the San Diego NOOD (already canceled) will no longer be held next weekend the 21st and 22nd of March. Hopefully, it will prove to be a postponement, but no one knows how this year will play out. In that same sense of un...certainty, there is a good chance that Etchells Midwinters West (April 3-5) will also be postponed or canceled. We'll provide an update as quickly as possible. While this isn't the official announcement yet, it is further likely that Fleet 13 will not score the West Coast Spring Series for 2020, which of course includes the two regattas mentioned above as well as the Etchells US Nationals later in April and the Orca Bowl in May. The hope is that those can still be held, but they would be left as stand-alone competitions. Of course, this disappointment in our pastime brings some sadness, but better the overabundance of caution than a judgment of recklessness in hindsight. It is understood that this is the largest inconvenience for those of you traveling to join SDYC Fleet 13 in San Diego, and the fleet will look forward to making it up to you in the future. There will be refunds that need to be made for those of you who have paid registration fees; bear with the process, please.
