I like comparing the rehearsal process with the process of making a Japanese Katanathe world’s best sword. The Katana is made by folding and welding pieces of high and low carbon steel thousands of times. In a rehearsal you should be folding and welding the script material thousands of times in order to create the best performance. The best things in life are not easy to achieve. You should be prepared to work hard and spend a lot of time if you want the outcome of your work... to be unique and phenomenal. Important to realize that in the same way we can accomplish anything in our life by doing the same thing over and over thousands of times like the Katana is made by folding and welding of the steel. Directors and actors frequently talk about certain objectives when they work on their scenes. These tools have more than 100 years history. Let’s explore what is Super objective and Scene Objective. The SUPER OBJECTIVE is what does your character wants more than anything from life throughout the film or play. The SCENE OBJECTIVE is what does your character wants more than anything throughout the scene. Prior to Stanislavski, an actor’s job was to portray a certain emotional c...liché on the director’s command. There was a list of specific gestures, facial expressions, body language samples and emotions that the actors had to learn and perform perfectly. Theater was based on Result-Oriented directing, in which the directors asked for a certain final expression from the actor (e.g. cry, laugh, or be angry). Acting consisted of strained line readings with overacted emotions. You can still see this in low-grade movies and TV shows. This approach leads to dead forms of acting, including fake-looking emotions. Around the turn of the twentieth century, Constantin Stanislavski faced a crisis in the theater and saw the need for a change. As it was discussed in one of my previous posts, Stanislavski recognized three types of acting: (1) The Art of Performance, (2) The Art of Living, (3) The Art as a Craft. The Art of Performance is an older technique, in which actors were trained imitate various emotions and reactions. But as noted by Stanislavski and his followers, a play or film based on the Art of Performance usually leaves the audience uninvolved and uninterested. Stanislavski brought The Art of Living into the theater, which helped audiences become deeply and personally attached to plays. The Art of Living is the opposite of the Art of Performance. The Art of Living is not just a depiction of the external manifestations of thinking and feeling, but the creation of a scene by depicting the inner lives of the characters and infusing the characters’ alien lives with the actor’s own human feelings. http://www.ernestgoodmanstudio.com/tool-1-super-objective-/ See more

The main assumption in acting and directing actors is the idea that human emotions and feelings only appear spontaneously, and therefore cannot be called up by the director or the actor. Stanislavski would tell this story when teaching to emphasis on this point: The wife is waiting for her husband to come home after work at the factory. She has cooked a nice dinner for him. Abruptly, she gets a phone call telling her that her husband was killed in an accident at the factory.... And what do you think was the first thought of the poor woman? She thinks what will I do with dinner now? Stanislavski used this to demonstrate how thoughts and emotions can be spontaneously illogical. Did we always cry when we should? Really, sometimes in life we laugh or behave very differently when crying would be more logical. So what is a natural and real behavior is what also works in the theater or film. And because it is natural, it affects the audience as such. Mistakenly, many new directors will ask for a particular emotion from the actor or actress. Unnatural and imitated emotions and feelings often leave the audience indifferent and cold. In ordinary life, we don’t think about our emotions and feelings, they usually appear after our thoughts. There are certain people who train (like religious monks,) who can control their stream of thoughts for short periods of time. Or they can be in mental silence which means a mental state without any thoughts, but the average person cannot do it.
