Anatomy lesson 1: THE SUSPENSORY LIGAMENT The suspensory ligament is the horse's shock absorber. it lies on the cannon bone between the fetlock and the carpal joint of all 4 legs. It needs about 4 years to entirely evolve and be stable enough to absorb and withheld pressure without getting injured. That is why you shouldn't start riding your horse until it is 4 years of age and its safe to put weight on top of it. ... Especially cantering and jumping puts a lot of pressure on the suspensory ligament. That's why it is important to warm up your horse with walking before going into any trotting, canter or jumping exercise.
