A Love Story of Two People and the Community They Loved The Encinitas Historical Society will be hosting a book signing on Saturday, February 13, 2021, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. It will be held in the garden outside the 1883 One-Room Schoolhouse, which is located at 390 West F Street. Ian Thompson, husband of the late city council mayor and beloved local activist and politician, Maggie Houlihan, wrote a true account of their years in Encinitas. This record reveals their lov...e for each other and for the causes they served and the unbelievable injustice that followed Maggie during the time she served our community. Thompson’s book An Inconvenient Voice, One Woman’s Fight Against Injustice, is a fascinating read. This accurate documentation of her years here, her community service and her time in office is an important part of the history of Encinitas. The story of Maggie Houlihan’s journey from poverty to politics as told by the man who knew her best.

Heritage Tree to Light the Encinitas Sky on December 1st The Encinitas Historical Society is thrilled to announce we will once again light the majestic Heritage Tree located near Moonlight Beach! Thanks to a generous anonymous donor we can continue to bring joy and a season of holiday spirit to the community. The Heritage Tree, located at 4th and C Street, will be decorated with lights on Tuesday, December 1st and will light the dark sky beginning December 4, 2020 at 6pm. Unf...ortunately, this year we will not be able to hear the chorus of children from Park Dale Lane Elementary School, San Dieguito Children Chorus or music from the Brown Family but we can still enjoy our local heritage tree as it fills our hearts with light and love. This 2nd City of Encinitas designated heritage tree was planted in 1952 by Ben Danforth and sons as a gift to their mother Jane Danforth. In 1994, Luis Ortiz started decorating this Norfolk Island pine, also referred to as a Star Pine. In 2015 the Encinitas Historical Society took over the funding and continuation of the annual tradition, including under grounding the electrical conduits, and creating its own address and energy source. Please take the time to venture to Moonlight Beach and admire the beauty of our majestic pine during this special season.
