Today we woke up with heavy hearts. We stand with #blacklivesmatter and demand justice for the countless people assaulted and killed by police all around the country, simply for existing in black bodies. While this won’t undo the systemic racism that is engrained in our country’s history, we still want to provide a safe space for our students to have an outlet to release their emotions and express themselves. How amazing and care-free do our students look?? This is all just them making it up as they go, no choreography! We do multiple improv exercises with @themissmarquez at the helm, seamlessly guided us between loose prompts and free-reign creativity. Empowerment in Heels has always been about more than just classes or performance opportunities; it’s a community. And now, our community is coming together to help each other through the creation of a Mutual Aid Network by EIH CARES. We’ve created a shared spreadsheet with needs, offers, and a marketplace for goods and services. This spreadsheet is for anyone in the EIH Community, not just students. Please don’t be shy; if you have something you can give (even money or time) ...or if you have something you need, now is the time to share so we can support each other during this difficult time. We know that the last few months have been an extremely trying time for those both in and outside of our community. Some days you feel super inspired and productive, others you can’t bring yourself to brush your teeth, and some people aren’t able to pay rent. But, while many of us are struggling to meet basic necessities, this time is inspiring us to think differently about how Empowerment in Heels can be there for the community. Because we have always been about more than ...just burlesque classes and performance opportunities: we’re a COMMUNITY. This is why #EmpowermentInHeelsCares is launching a Mutual Aid Network and Marketplace! What it is: A Mutual Aid Network is a new type of community-care that is designed for its members to support each other DIRECTLY. No applications. No barriers. No middle (wo)mxn. A lot of us are frustrated with how difficult it is receive unemployment right now and with big corporations like Amazon deciding how and when we can get our groceries. But what's the alternative? We think it's supporting each other. What it isn’t: Charity. Typically, the government, wealthy donors, or corporations have been gate keepers that deem a person worthy or unworthy of need. It’s a disempowering model that is based on outdated power dynamics. And we say FUCK THAT. Everyone is worthy of living a happy and healthy life. How It Works: One example of a M.A.N. (!) is a living spreadsheet where someone can type in their name, contact info, and their request. It can be anything from a ride to the grocery store, someone to drop off groceries at a sick family member’s house who lives too far away, a roll of toilet paper, or fifty bucks to cover rent. If someone is able to provide that, they can just go ahead and fulfill that request. Voila! Babes helping babes. Today is Mother’s Day, so let’s give thanks to ALL the maternal figures in our lives, biological or chosen. We’re starting with our burlesque mama, @themissmarquez. An accomplished performer and artist in her own right, Miss Marquez started Empowerment in Heels in 2017, wanting to provide a safe space for all bodies to experience the power and beauty of burlesque. She has launched burlesque careers and performances of countless babes, mentored already established performers, ...and created a space for students to collaborate, discuss ideas, and talk about their lives and current events. Once the Stay at Home was enacted in Los Angeles, Miss Marquez worked tirelessly to provide the same high quality burlesque education to her students, but in an online format. And because she knows how important the EIH community is, she took the Sunday post-class hang online as well. Join us this afternoon for our Improv-Based Burlesque class at 3pm PST.
