While in distance learning, teachers and students need our support more than ever. Showing up for your own kids is important, but how can we show up and support school communities with fewer resources than our own? Join the local chapter of @integratedschools this Thursday, October 1st at 7:30pm for a conversation with teachers about how we can be better equity accomplices. Emerson Elementary parent and writer Courtney Martin will be interviewing two local teachersPiedmont Avenue Elementary School’s Dexter Coleman and Fruitvale Elementary School’s Bethany Meyerabout what is needed to honor equity during the pandemic. With help from our partners at Alameda County and the Alameda County Office of Education, we packed up student meals for today's grab and go food distribution i...n bags reminding everyone to take part in the 2020 Census. Just like student meals are critical for the well-being of our young people, everyone completing the census is critical for the well-being of our community. It helps determine how much federal funding our city and county will receive for critical services and it is also used to assign how much representation the area has in Congress. Please do the census by filling out the form you received in the mail or online at 2020census.gov. You can also call 844-330-2020 to do it in English, 844-468-2020 for Spanish, 844-398-2020 for Chinese (Cantonese), 844-461-2020 for Vietnamese, and 844-416-2020 for Arabic. There are more languages with associated numbers listed on the website. The census includes NO questions about immigration status. Remember that our grab and go happens at 22 sites across the city, and all children, 18 years old and younger, plus our Young Adult Program students can come and get food. Families can pick up food without bringing their students. And don't worry, we don't share student or family information with any outside entities. The grab and go happens 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Join us! Please wear your mask to protect yourself and those around you. #iamOUSD
Now, every full priced order ($35 bag of produce delivered to your house), will allow one of the Oakland families who were part of the summer program to receive a bag at a highly reduced price they can afford. Farms-to-Communities' weekly CSA (or fresh produce bags) bags have 12-15 pounds of organic and sustainably grown fruits and vegetables, including staples like greens & potatoes as well as seasonal items like peaches and melons. Click here for more information and to sign up. Over the summer, Farm-to Communities hired two dozen OUSD parents to run the operation to deliver food safely all over Oakland and helped the dedicated small organic farmers of our region to stay in business. https://farmstocommunities.org/
