Happy Juneteenth! On this day in 1865 slavery was abolished in the U.S. state of Texas. When the Civil War came to a close in 1865, many people remained enslaved. Word that slavery had ended traveled unwillingly to the deepest parts of the former Confederacy. For those particularly in remote areas, liberation did not exist. This was especially the case in Texas, where thousands of slaves were not made aware of freedom until June 19, 1865. The Emancipation Proclamation was si...gned in 1863 but Texas was the last state in the confederacy to adopt it. Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and delivered an order officially freeing the slaves there. The celebration that day would serve as the basis of Juneteenth - a holiday celebrating emancipation in the US.
