This weekend is Field Day, HAM radio’s open house. Every June since 1933, more than 40,000 radio operators throughout North America have set up temporary transmitting stations demonstrating HAM radio's science, skill and service to our communities and our nation as part of Field Day. This combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day remains the most popular event in HAM radio. It is a wonderful mean...s of connecting the amateur radio community together while solidifying the skills of newly licensed operators and sharing the joy with the wider community. Due to Covid19, our local clubs will not gather together in local fields this year. Instead, members will take to the airwaves while sheltering in place. Club members who take part in a competition for points will this year participate individually and add their results to those of other club members. This pandemic has raised our awareness of the need for community emergency preparedness of all sorts. People are asking, how can I help? Amateur radio is one avenue. Radio operators provide key support to local events during the year. For example, at the recent Cycle of Hope benefiting Habitat for Humanity, radio operators provided an additional layer of safety, with teams at key stations along the planned route. Amateur radio people also play a helpful part in local Community Emergency Response Teams and are well known for their support in disaster and post-disaster situations. Lockdowns have also left many of us longing for a greater sense of connectedness, and this event is a great way to enjoy the social aspect of amateur radio even though we’re apart. Want to know more? Visit a local club (maybe online during this time) - find one at the ARRL website. No, you don’t need to know Morse Code (though you might enjoy it) but you’ll need a license to get on the air... Happy World Oceans Day! This year’s focus is "Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean" The Monterey Bay Aquarium is shining a light on California’s unique and important ecosystem. The waters of Monterey Bay, on California’s central coast, include a two-mile-deep submarine canyon, kelp forests and coastal estuaries. These productive ecosystems support abundant wildlife, from territorial sea otters to migratory whales. At the Aquariums Ocean Memory Lab, researchers are using the latest technology and data science to help establish the metrics of a healthy ocean. By reconstructing historical ocean conditions, we can better understand how to restore the thriving ecosystems upon which we all depend. https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/

At this difficult time in our world, we want to be of support to you and your community by sharing a free resource we developed to reduce toxic stress: The Breathing Butterfly. The visualization at the heart of the app uses a butterfly metaphor; watch it open and close its wings in harmony with every breath you take. Soothing music combined with gentle animation promote calm, regular breathing as you cultivate inner peace. That’s important, because even when we can’t control ...life events, we can always influence our reaction and stress-busting tools help us do just that. Available for download in the Apple App Store, Google Play and Amazon https://elffound.org/butterfly.php https://apps.apple.com//the-breathing-butterfly/id975817441

The Elfenworks Foundation is working in conjunction with San Bruno Mountain Watch to help with their efforts to save butterflies and their habitats. Did you know that San Bruno Mountain is host to three rare butterflies? The San Bruno Elfin, The Mission Blue and the Callipe Silverspot. All are federally listed as endangered and San Bruno Mountain is the only place on the planet where these three species coexist! If you would like to learn more about these beautiful creatures and current conservation efforts click the link below https://www.mountainwatch.org/
