Eldo Race Series by Bikeable Communities

Please tell CalTrans they made PCH more dangerous when they added the rumble strips on PCH between Warner and Seapoint. Send an e-mail to [email protected] (see talking points below). CalTrans recently installed Rumble Strips on southbound PCH between Warner and Seapoint. This is one of the most used sections of PCH for bicyclists. It is estimated that over 1000 cyclists use this every week.... As the video shows CalTrans has made this stretch of PCH more dangersous for cyclists as a result of their placement of the rumble strips where bicyclists regularly ride. While we applaud CalTrans efforts to make this high speed stretch of PCH safer for all users...they have failed. While we don't object to the use of rumble strips next to high speed roadways if they are placed out of the cylists pathway....we strongly object to them being placed where cyclists are most likely to ride. Because of the character of this part of PCH (directly adjacent to Bolsa Chica Beach) sand is more often than not intruding into the shoulder. This frequently eliminates more than half the useable space. Now...they have added 1 foot wide rumble strips and foot from the edge line, eliminating two more feet of space for cyclists to safely ride. Please contact CalTrans District 12 (that's OC) PIO (Public Information officer email [email protected]) and let them know your thoughts. Here are some talking points that I have put together. 1. The rumble strips near Warner, where total shoulder width is no more than 4 feet wide...needs to be removed now. 2. The construction debris near Seapoint, that forces cyclists into the travel lane needs to be removed now: 3. The rumble strips on the remaining area need to be removed or redone. Best practices dictate that if rumble strips are going to be used they would be place straddling the edge line and our preferance would be to have hem on the outside of the edge line. 4. The 2016 PCH corridor study recommended a 6 foot bike lane with a 2 foot foot buffer on each side of PCH. A rumble strip on the outer edge of the buffer would be a nice addition.
