Meet Counselor Anna Liza Olivares Anna Liza is a native Angeleno. She is a proud Anteater (Zot! While staying #saferathome this summer, Counselor Olivares has been taking her dog Ollie on walks, doing , making time to read books for fun, hanging out with friends and family in virtual Zoom sessions, and getting ready to teach Counsel 040 in a few days. As we start the Fall 2020 term in a few days she has the following advice: "Embrace opportunities! Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone whether that means visiting a professor during office hours, making a new friend in class, or joining clubs!"
I’m Carmen Soto, a counselor at ELAC. I’ve created an example of a remote learning supply list and tips. Every student is unique with different schedules, responsibilities, needs and access to space, do what works for you, but hopefully you find this post helpful Slide 2 &3: Identify a desk, table or laptop tray to create your remote learning environment. Use technology accessible to you a phone, tablet or laptop. ... Slide 4: Use headphones for increased concentration and ease. Slide 5: Think of your laptop/phone/tablet screen as the classroom board and minimize distractions by using a notebook for writing notes. A multi- subject notebook will help you stay organized. Slide 6: Input tasks, homework, deadlines, exams and assignments in an academic planner, calendar or journal to keep important dates in a central space. Slide 7: Gather writing utensils, organizational supplies, snacks/water, optional accessories and required items for each course. Slide 8: Need better light, a fan, to be close to internet modem, or an iced coffee to help you feel more comfortable? Add anything you need to make your space your own. Slide 9: Anticipate challenges like slow internet, a noisy household, and being unable to define your learning space. Be kind to yourself and others, flexible and patient. Focus on what you can control. Remote learning is a challenge, but with optimism, we can make the best of it. This list should help you feel a little more prepared. Slide 10: Summary of supplies Identify a learning space Laptop/tablet/phone & charger(s) Headphones Notebook(s) Planner/calendar/journal Pens Pencils and eraser Highlighters Snacks and hydration Preferred items (i.e. wireless mouse, post-its, index cards, etc.) Required items for class according to syllabus
