There’s still time to sign up for our Good Trouble Reading Group session for Wednesday, February 3 to discuss a selection from African American Poetry: 250 Years of Struggle and Song. Email us and we’ll send you the Zoom link and the poems! Editor Kevin Young presents the full, dazzling scope of African American poetry and illuminates its centrality to American literature. From the Middle Passage, recollected in 1773 by poet Phyllis Wheatley, to the Black Lives Matter movemen...t, Young selects some 250 poets known and should-be-known, and situates them in their historic and literary milieu. Rich and expansive, covering traditional forms, experimental verse, and every mood from resistance to joy, this collection is a monumental contribution to American culture. We will meet to discuss a selection from African American Poetry on Wednesday, February 3 at 4:00 p.m. PST. It’s available as a print book via Library To Go, but unfortunately because of the recent publication date it is not yet available as an e-book or an audiobook. Email [email protected] for the Zoom link to join. If you are unable to access a copy of the book via LAPL but are interested in attending, sign up anyway and we may be able to send you a selection of the poems we will be reading and discussing. For ADA accommodations, call (213) 228-7430 at least 72 hours prior to the event. Para ajustes razonables segun la ley de ADA, llama al (213) 228-7430 al menos 72 horas antes del evento.

Join the Good Trouble Reading Group with Dr. Andrea Liss for our next book, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me (2015), a piercing and revelatory examination of racism in America. Conceived as a letter to his adolescent son to prepare him for the world he will soon face, Coates shines new light on our tragic past, fearlessly confronts our present and seeks a transcendent vision for a better future. E-mail [email protected] for the Zoom link if you would like to join. We wi...ll meet to discuss Between the World and Me on Wednesday January 6 at 4:00 p.m. PST. Between the World and Me is available through LAPL as a print book via Library-to-Go service, also as an e-book, an audiobook on CD, and an e-audiobook. The Good Trouble Reading Book shares books that engage themes of social justice with love and family at their core. Dr. Andrea Liss is Professor Emerita of Visual Culture and Cultural Theory at California State University San Marcos and a local Echo Park resident. Her teaching and research focus on feminist visual culture and writing, visual art and photography related to historical events and representations of social justice particularly through the work of African American women. For ADA accommodations, call (213) 228-7430 at least 72 hours prior to the event. Para ajustes razonables segun la ley de ADA, llama al (213) 228-7430 al menos 72 horas antes del evento.
