BREATH AND MOVEMENT There are numerous ways to move the body. What separates vinyasa apart from most modalities is that the breath guides the physicality. To be clear, there is nothing wrong or unsafe about moving the body minus specific breath patterns; one can point to dance or gymnastics as examples. However, one can also discern that those are not vinyasa. The foundational element of a vinyasa practice is the connection to your breath. ... As an exercise notice how your inhale and exhale have observable effects on the body. Pay attention to how your breath begins at the belly, rises, and expands upward. The inhale breath is expressed by the body visibly by lifting, expanding and opening. Now, the opposite happens when you breathe out. The body decompresses, roots down, rounds inward, and the muscles contract. These explicit and implicit systems are found in nature as well; trees, leaves, and flowers rise up as their roots spiral down.
